In Ars Technica reviewer Chris Foresman’s listening test, it played on a fully manual Audio-Technica LP-120, but sounded quieter than comparable larger records and showed some distortion near the ends of tracks. He also had trouble playing it on the specific Crosley suitcase-style player he tested. Those results make Tiny Vinyl an intriguing collectible, but not a straightforward replacement for a 7-inch single.
What is Tiny Vinyl?
Tiny Vinyl is a miniature vinyl single, just 4 inches across. Ars Technica describes it as being made through a process nearly identical to that used for standard 12-inch LPs and 7-inch singles, but at a smaller scale. The format uses a standard-size spindle hole, plays at 33⅓ RPM and holds up to four minutes of music per side. These are specifications reported in the review, not independent industry measurements. The review says the format was developed through a collaboration between a toy-industry veteran and a vinyl record manufacturer. It also reports that several artists and groups had experimented with it. For its 2025 launch, Tiny Vinyl partnered with Target on 44 exclusive titles scheduled to appear through the end of that year. That was a launch plan, not confirmation of current stock or prices.
How did Tiny Vinyl sound in the listening test?
Foresman tested promotional and retail records on an Audio-Technica LP-120 direct-drive manual turntable, connected to a Yamaha S-301 amplifier and vintage Klipsch kg4 speakers. He also tried a Crosley suitcase-style player and a miniature RSD3 player, and compared selected tracks with 12-inch and 3-inch versions. These are the reviewer’s listening observations under his stated setup, not laboratory measurements or a guarantee of how every pressing and system will sound.

Quieter playback and end-of-track distortion
At the same amplifier setting, the Tiny Vinyl version of a track tended to play quieter than its 12-inch counterpart. That difference does not by itself establish that the smaller format is inherently quieter: the reviewer notes that mastering can affect playback level, and that keeping the grooves compact helps accommodate the short playing time.
He also heard a slight but audible increase in distortion as some grooves approached the stylus’s physical alignment limits, usually in the last several seconds of a song. He considered the overall sound comparable to typical vinyl, though short of the most exacting audiophile pressings. As Foresman put it, “The sound was not expected to compare to a quality 12-inch pressing, and it doesn’t.”

One track compared across three sizes
In his comparison of “Linus and Lucy,” Foresman found the LP version brighter and noticeably louder than the 4-inch version. The 3-inch version sounded fairly comparable to Tiny Vinyl, but noisier; he thought the difference likely reflected manufacturing-material differences. These are his impressions of the versions he heard, not a general ranking of every record in each size.
Will a 4-inch Tiny Vinyl record play on your turntable?
Compatibility depends on the exact player and whether its tonearm can reach and track the small record. Automatic turntables may support only 12-inch and 7-inch records, and an automatic-return mechanism can start returning the tonearm before the grooves on a 4-inch record are finished. A fully manual tonearm gives the listener more control over stylus placement, but the turntable still needs a physical design that allows the record to sit and spin properly.

Fully manual turntables
On the Audio-Technica LP-120, Foresman manually placed the stylus and reported that it tracked the records. In his listening experience, an elliptical stylus tracked slightly better than a standard conical stylus. That observation is specific to his test; he cautions that high-end styli may be excessive given the format’s physical limits.
Suitcase-style players
On the Crosley suitcase-style player he tested, the record would not spin on the platter without a slipmat. Once it did spin, the tonearm could not track beyond the first few grooves. Tiny Vinyl later told Ars Technica that it had successfully tested records on a Crosley Voyager and a Victrola Brighton, but Ars could not independently verify those models. The mixed results are a reason to check compatibility by model rather than assume all suitcase players behave alike.

What to check before buying
- Confirm that your turntable can physically hold and spin a 4-inch record, including whether a slipmat or adapter is needed.
- Check whether the tonearm can be placed over the record and track its grooves through playback.
- For an automatic player, check whether its supported record sizes and return mechanism accommodate a 4-inch disc.
- If the maker or seller claims compatibility, look for confirmation for your exact model; results from a different turntable do not establish that yours will work.

Who is Tiny Vinyl for?
Tiny Vinyl makes the most sense for listeners drawn to compact physical releases, miniature artwork and collectibility, provided they have a compatible player or are willing to verify one. Its portability and presentation are part of the appeal; the reviewer’s sound and compatibility findings are meaningful trade-offs for anyone buying primarily to listen.
Before choosing a release, compare four things: whether your exact turntable can track it, how the sound and volume compare with a 7-inch or 12-inch version, the price relative to the amount of music, and how much you value the smaller format and packaging. The Ars review offers no current price or stock verification, so those details need to be checked for the particular release.
