Emu Export’s identity is distinctly Western Australian, even though a 2021 account said it was no longer brewed in the state. The lager’s Perth origins, familiar nicknames and “Beer for Western Australia” can slogan help explain why it remains a WA icon; those cultural ties are separate from where it was made.
What is Emu Export?
Emu Export is a canned lager known in Western Australia by the nicknames “Bush Chook,” “Red Can” and “‘Sport.” PerthNow’s Simon Collins described it as a WA icon in a tasting column published on 26 November 2021. The can slogan quoted in that feature was “Beer for Western Australia”.
Where did it come from, and where was it brewed in 2021?
Collins reported that Swan Brewery first brewed Emu Export in 1954 at the Emu Brewery in Perth. The old brewery building was demolished in late 1991.
The same November 2021 feature said production had moved to West End Brewery in Adelaide in 2014. After that brewery closed, production was split between Lion facilities in New South Wales and Queensland, according to the article. These are the feature’s dated production details, not confirmation of the beer’s current brewing locations.

What did the 2021 review say about the beer?
Collins described the lager as 4.2 per cent alcohol, with a mild malt nose, sharp bitterness and a hoppy finish. He rated it two tins out of five. Those are details and an assessment from his 2021 review, rather than a current independent check of the product or its formulation.
