The first widely reported candid set photos of Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan appeared in March 2024 while A Complete Unknown was filming in New York. They showed Chalamet in a brown jacket with wild hair and carrying a battered guitar case—not an official studio still. The distinction matters: the set photos circulated before the film’s formal first-look imagery.
What the set photos showed
Good Morning America reported that Chalamet was photographed filming in downtown Manhattan on March 24, 2024. Its description notes a brown jacket, wild hair and sunglasses in some images, with period details visible in the background. Pitchfork’s March 18 report, published as production was underway, described him in a worn-looking outfit carrying a battered guitar case.

Set photos versus official first-look stills
The candid photographs were reported before official first-look images, according to Pitchfork. They are a separate image package from the studio publicity stills now hosted on Searchlight Pictures’ press page. Searchlight’s official film page places the story in New York in 1961 and follows a young musician from Minnesota as he rises. Chalamet plays Dylan in James Mangold’s film. The listed cast also includes Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash and Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie.

Gibson’s December 12, 2024 partnership announcement identifies a later film still of Chalamet with one of two Gibson J-50 guitars made for the production and describes a film-linked acoustic collection. That is a documented connection between Gibson instruments and the film; it does not identify the battered guitar case in the March 2024 candid set photos as a Gibson product.
