For Joel Smallbone, playing his father in Unsung Hero meant revisiting his family’s move from Australia—but from the perspective of the parent he had watched as a child. Smallbone said the role gave him a sharper sense of the stress and strain his father faced, and called the experience “a very expensive therapy session.”
Joel Smallbone plays his father, David
In Unsung Hero, Joel Smallbone portrays his real father, David Smallbone. Joel also co-wrote and co-directed the 2024 film with Richard L. Ramsey. Lionsgate’s film page describes the story as following David and Helen Smallbone and their family from Australia to the United States after David’s music company collapses.

The family’s story later includes the musical careers of Rebecca St. James and the band for KING + COUNTRY, whose members include Joel and his brother Luke. The film is a dramatization based on the family story, not a documentary record of every event. Its U.S. release date was April 26, 2024, according to Lionsgate.
Why playing his father changed his perspective
Smallbone told Cross Rhythms that the idea of playing his father initially struck him as “really novel.” He and his siblings knew David closely, he said, but he had not fully considered what it would mean to portray him.

As a child, Smallbone had experienced the family’s upheaval from a son’s point of view. Taking on David’s role required him, by his account, to imagine the adult pressures behind that same period: stress, strain, fear, pride and what he called “compounding failure.” That is Smallbone’s reflection on inhabiting the role, not a claim that the film reproduces every private thought or historical detail.
He described the process as “a very expensive therapy session,” adding that it was “an awfully worthy one.” Smallbone also said his empathy for his parents and what they had gone through “just skyrocketed.”
What the film emphasizes about the family story
Smallbone has described the story as being about taking risks and standing together in difficult circumstances. In remarks quoted by Faith Films, he said: “It’s a story about taking leaps of faith and taking risks. It’s about fighting for each other instead of against each other in really dire, desperate moments.” That perspective complements the film’s account of a family trying to rebuild after David’s music company fails.
Faith Films lists a runtime of 1 hour 53 minutes and describes the Canadian theatrical release as April 26, 2024. The same date is listed for the U.S. release on Lionsgate’s page; the two release details refer to different territories.
