The film is positioned as accessible teen horror rather than extreme, purely realistic slasher cinema. Its central appeal comes from the collision of two familiar ideas: a masked-killer story and a time-travel problem in which saving one person may have consequences for another time period.

Is Time Cut worth watching?
Time Cut is worth considering if the combination of teen horror, 2000s nostalgia, a masked killer, and time travel is more important to you than consistently original execution. The premise is immediately understandable, the runtime is compact, and the film offers a straightforward speculative hook for viewers who want a relatively accessible horror thriller.
The critical response was mostly negative. Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 26% Tomatometer score from 34 critics and a 32% audience score from more than 500 ratings when retrieved in 2024; aggregate scores are not permanent and may change.
The main criticism is not that the premise lacks potential. The Guardian argued that the film becomes repetitive and over-familiar within the recent cycle of gimmick-driven slashers, while TheWrap focused on the resemblance to established genre formulas and argued that the time-travel mechanics are not developed as deeply as the setup promises. The A.V. Club’s review also noted the film’s 2000s music and fashion nostalgia while comparing it unfavorably with Totally Killer.

That creates a useful distinction: Time Cut may be appealing as a high-concept pitch even for viewers who agree with the criticism of its execution. Viewers seeking a highly inventive time-travel story or a particularly frightening slasher may want to keep expectations modest.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Time Cut like Totally Killer?
Time Cut is comparable to Totally Killer at the broad concept level because both belong to the modern group of teen-oriented stories that combine time travel, nostalgia, and slasher mechanics. The comparison should not be taken to mean that the two films use identical killer mysteries, time-travel rules, tone, or character arcs.
| Comparison point | Time Cut | What viewers should compare with another time-travel slasher |
|---|---|---|
| Time-travel setup | Lucy moves from 2024 to 2003 | Whether the earlier period changes the mystery or mainly supplies the setting |
| Central emotional stake | Lucy tries to save her sister Summer | Whether the personal relationships develop beyond stopping the murders |
| Genre blend | Teen horror, sci-fi thriller, serial-killer mystery, and nostalgia | How the balance of comedy, suspense, gore, and nostalgia differs |
| Time travel’s function | The time jump creates an opportunity to prevent a past murder | Whether altered history produces meaningful consequences, clues, or complications |
| Best audience fit | Viewers wanting accessible teen horror with a speculative hook | Viewers wanting either lighter teen entertainment or a more intense and inventive slasher |
The fairest way to choose between films is to compare the time-travel integration and character work, not just the shared “teen slasher plus nostalgia” label. The Guardian and The A.V. Club both place Time Cut in a broader cycle of familiar genre premises, which helps explain why the comparison with Totally Killer comes up.

Does Time Cut explain its time-travel rules?
Time Cut uses time travel as the mechanism that sends Lucy from 2024 to 2003 before the murders, but the available research supports the premise more clearly than a detailed, scene-by-scene account of the film’s timeline mechanics. The safest spoiler-light description is that Lucy’s attempt to save Summer creates the story’s central question about how changing the past may affect the future.
That distinction matters because reviews criticized the film for not developing the time-travel concept as fully as its premise suggests. A detailed explanation of every rule, paradox, or ending consequence should be checked against the completed film rather than inferred from promotional summaries.
Who is the killer in Time Cut?
The masked killer is the antagonist who murders Summer in the film’s central premise, but revealing the killer’s identity would spoil the mystery. The available synopsis establishes the threat and Lucy’s mission without providing a spoiler-safe basis for identifying the person behind the mask.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Time Cut is a 91-minute Netflix teen time-travel slasher built around Lucy’s attempt to save her sister from a 2003 killer. The premise suits viewers who enjoy accessible teen horror and nostalgia, but the 2024 critical response suggests keeping expectations moderate about originality and the depth of its time-travel mechanics.
