Spoilers for the 2024 film Time Cut. The Sweetly Slasher is Future Quinn, not the younger Quinn Lucy befriends in 2003. Lucy kills Future Quinn and saves Summer, then stays in 2003 with her sister—even though doing so means giving up the 2024 life she came from. The ending favors the sisters’ chance to live together over a tidy explanation of time-travel mechanics.
Who is the Sweetly Slasher?
The killer is Future Quinn: an older version of Lucy’s classmate, not the Quinn she meets in 2003. In the history that led to the murders, Quinn was bullied and later traveled back to kill Summer and her classmates. The younger Quinn Lucy befriends belongs to the altered history created by her intervention.
In 2003, Lucy saves Quinn from being thrown into a river by bullies. Director and co-writer Hannah Macpherson describes that act of kindness as a turning point: “One person reaching out and becoming a friend where there was no friend can make a difference.” The film presents the younger Quinn as good-natured after Lucy changes the course of his life; Future Quinn remains the Slasher from the other history.
What happens in the ending?
- Lucy travels from 2024 to 2003 to meet Summer, the older sister she never knew, and try to prevent the killings.
- As well as trying to protect Summer, Lucy changes Quinn’s past by intervening when bullies target him.
- Lucy confronts Future Quinn and stabs him through the heart. Summer survives.
- The ending shows Lucy and Summer living together in 2003. Lucy’s original timeline no longer exists, so she cannot simply return to the 2024 life she left.
Why does Lucy stay in 2003?
Lucy’s choice is a sacrifice for the chance to have a life with Summer. She has saved her sister, but the changed history leaves her without the future she came from. Macpherson told Netflix Tudum that Lucy has to “literally choose between her sister’s life and her own existence.” She said the story gave the filmmakers a way to explore family and ask what people are willing to sacrifice.

Staying also follows the emotional logic of the ending: Lucy and Summer can now share the life that Lucy’s original history denied them. It is not presented as a precise, fully worked-out rule for how altered timelines operate. The film’s emphasis is on what Lucy gives up and what she gains by choosing her sister.
What ending did the filmmakers consider instead?
Macpherson said the filmmakers considered an alternative in which both sisters would be alive in the present, with Summer about 20 years older than Lucy. The released ending instead lets them experience life together as teenagers. Macpherson explained the preference simply: “It just felt so good, time-travel logic be damned.” The alternative was considered, not shown as another version of the released film.

What the ending leaves unresolved
The film does not provide a rigorous scientific account of how its time travel or timeline paradoxes work. The director’s comments indicate that the filmmakers prioritized the emotional outcome—Lucy and Summer together—over resolving every consequence of the changed history. The useful distinction is between the two Quinns: Lucy’s intervention changes the younger Quinn’s path, while the Sweetly Slasher is Future Quinn from the history that produced the murders.
