Timberline Lodge, the Oregon landmark whose exterior appears in The Shining, caught fire on April 18, 2024. The blaze was confined to the roof and attic, no injuries were reported, and guests and staff were evacuated. The lodge said embers from its large stone fireplace may have started the fire; that was a possible cause, not a confirmed investigation finding.

Guests and staff were evacuated, and the lodge temporarily closed. The lodge said embers from its large stone fireplace may have caused the fire. That explanation was reported as a possibility, not as a final fire-investigation determination. The lodge described the damage as appearing “somewhat minimal”; in its later update it called the fire and water damage “benign.” Those are the lodge’s characterizations, not independent technical assessments.
When did the lodge reopen?
In an April 20 follow-up, AP reported that Timberline planned to reopen to guests on Sunday, April 21, and that its ski area had reopened on Saturday, April 20. These are the reported plans and status at the time; they do not establish current operating conditions.

Was Timberline Lodge the real Overlook Hotel?
No. The Overlook is the fictional hotel in Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film The Shining. Timberline Lodge supplied its exterior for some establishing shots, but it was not the complete physical hotel depicted in the movie. The lodge’s official history explains that scenes including the hedge maze and loading dock were filmed at Elstree Studios in England.
So the shorthand “hotel from The Shining” refers to a real building associated with the film’s exterior imagery—not to a real Overlook Hotel, or to a claim that the film’s interiors were shot in Oregon.
