Tim Cook says Apple TV+ is not meant primarily to sell more iPhones. In a 2025 interview, he described it as a business Apple entered to tell great stories—and one the company wants to become a good business. That clarifies Apple’s stated intent; it does not prove the service is profitable, financially significant, or the right fit for every viewer.
What Tim Cook said about Apple TV+
In a Variety interview reported by BGR, Cook said he does not think about Apple TV+ as a way to sell more iPhones. He said Apple had studied the idea for years, entered the business to tell great stories, and wants it to become a good business. The interview took place in connection with Apple’s Formula 1 film, so it was also a promotional conversation.
Those are statements of strategy from Apple’s CEO, not an audited account of the service’s results. Cook is rejecting one explanation for why Apple funds the service; he is not demonstrating that Apple TV+ has already become a successful standalone business.

The ecosystem theory—and why it is not the whole story
The common “walled garden” argument is that Apple can justify streaming losses if exclusive shows encourage people to stay in the broader Apple ecosystem. A popular series might help make Apple services more attractive even if the subscription itself is not a major profit center. Cook’s remarks push back on the claim that selling iPhones is the point of TV+.

But the possibilities are not mutually exclusive. Apple can want TV+ to work as a media business and also benefit when viewers use Apple accounts, apps, devices, bundles, and services. The fact that the service is available beyond Apple hardware weakens the idea that it exists solely to lock buyers into an iPhone, but it does not erase those wider ecosystem benefits.
Apple TV+ was built around originals, not a giant archive
Apple’s 2019 launch announcement described Apple TV+ as an all-original subscription video service. It launched on November 1, 2019, in more than 100 countries and regions, with Apple Original series, films, and documentaries. That original-first model differs from services whose appeal also rests on large libraries of licensed movies and older television.

For a viewer seeking a focused selection of new originals, a smaller library may be perfectly workable. For someone who likes to browse a deep back catalog, revisit familiar shows, or find something across many genres every night, the limited breadth can be a real drawback. “Small” does not automatically mean “bad,” but it can mean poor value for a particular household.
Apple’s lineup includes shows such as Ted Lasso, Severance, Slow Horses, The Studio, and The Morning Show, as well as films and documentaries. Apple has also promoted its originals’ awards record; in October 2025, it cited 629 wins and 2,845 nominations. Those are Apple’s own tallies, and awards recognition is evidence of industry attention—not proof of broad appeal, viewing hours, or profitability.

Distribution is broader than Apple devices
Apple TV+ is not restricted to iPhones, iPads, or Apple TV hardware. Apple’s launch materials included access through Apple devices, the web, and selected third-party platforms, and the company has described Apple TV availability across smart TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, and the web. Support can depend on country, device model, and software, so check the Apple TV service for current availability rather than assuming every television or device is supported.
It is also useful to distinguish the names: Apple TV can refer to the app and viewing service, while Apple TV 4K is the company’s streaming hardware. You do not necessarily need Apple TV 4K to watch Apple TV+; a supported smart TV, streaming device, console, or browser may be enough.

Does Apple TV+ stand on its own financially?
Public Apple materials do not provide a clean standalone profit figure for Apple TV+. Apple reports its Services business more broadly, and engagement figures for Apple TV are not the same thing as TV+ subscribers, revenue, or earnings. Cook’s wish for the service to become a good business is an ambition, not a disclosure that it is already profitable.

That company-reported figure is a sign of activity on Apple TV, but it does not establish how much of that engagement came from the TV+ subscription or whether the service generated a profit. Without a standalone financial breakdown, claims that TV+ is either profitable or losing a particular amount should be treated cautiously unless they are clearly identified as outside estimates.

When a bundle or a short subscription makes sense
Apple One includes Apple TV alongside services such as Apple Music, Apple Arcade, and iCloud+, with plan contents and availability varying by market. Apple’s 2026 update says Individual and Family plans include those services in more than 100 markets; Premier is not available everywhere. Check Apple One’s current terms before comparing prices or calculating savings. A bundle can improve the value for a household already paying for several included services, but it may be wasteful if TV+ is the only one you want.
If you are interested in just one series or a particular release, subscribing for a month and cancelling afterward may be more sensible than keeping another service year-round. Check trial eligibility and renewal terms before signing up. If other people in your household will use it, verify the plan’s sharing rules and account setup in your region.
Who should subscribe?

The practical decision comes down to catalog fit, how often your household watches, tolerance for gaps between releases, device support, and whether a bundle you already use changes the cost. Acclaim can help you find promising programs, but it cannot guarantee that a service suits your tastes.
What the headline gets right—and what it overstates
Cook disputes the idea that Apple TV+ is primarily an iPhone sales tactic and says Apple wants the service to be a business in its own right. Apple’s original-focused product design and availability on third-party platforms are consistent with that stated aim. Yet viewers are not wrong to question catalog depth, release volume, or value, and the public evidence cited here cannot settle the service’s standalone profitability.
The fairest conclusion is narrower than “everyone’s wrong”: Cook is clarifying why Apple says it made the investment, not proving that every criticism of Apple TV+ is mistaken.
