Who was Amy Hawkins?
Amy Winifred Hawkins, née Evans, was born in Cardiff on 24 January 1911. She grew up around Newport, Wales, and was reported as the oldest living person in Wales at the time of her death. Her life before her unexpected online fame included dancing, retail work and wartime service as a neighbourhood fire-watcher.
Her story reached a much wider audience shortly after her 110th birthday, when a family video showed her singing at home.
Why did Amy Hawkins go viral on TikTok?
Hawkins’s great-grandson, Sacha Freeman, posted a clip of her singing “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary” to mark her birthday. A separate video showed the pair dancing to Nelly’s “Hot in Herre.” ITV News reported on 28 January 2021 that the singing clip had more than 45,000 views at that point; that was a dated snapshot, not a current view count. Freeman said Hawkins initially did not understand TikTok, so he explained that the video was “on the computer” and could be seen around the world. She responded to the attention with a modest, “I suppose it’s nice.” The Guardian
How did the family videos come about?
The clips were shared during Covid-19 restrictions, when Hawkins and relatives were living together in Monmouthshire. Family members described posting them as a way to connect with people who were missing their families. Her daughter, Rosemary Morris, reflected on the importance of companionship for older people living alone: “I can’t imagine how awful it must be for old people on their own without anybody to come to or hug.” The Guardian
