Sex Ed for Guys is a Colby College-associated student project that uses short, humorous social videos to talk about consent, contraception, relationships, respect and masculinity. Its creators and profiles present it as a counter-narrative to manosphere content: rather than argue in abstract terms, the videos use skits and familiar social-media formats to make healthier ideas easier to encounter. That is the project’s aim, not proof that it changes viewers’ beliefs or behavior.

What is Sex Ed for Guys?

Sex Ed for Guys is a student-led social-video project associated with Colby College and professor Adam Howard. Its starting point was work examining sex education at elite all-boys schools. The Colby Echo described the effort as an independent-study project sponsored by Howard; student David Stewart said the idea was to use TikTok to educate people about sex. The Colby Echo’s November 2023 profile recounts how students organized possible topics in a curriculum document, discussed them with Howard and developed them into videos.

Profiles differ on the precise launch year: Fast Company dates the school project to 2022, while Her Campus says the account launched in 2023 after a research study. The available accounts therefore support describing it as an early-2020s Colby student effort connected to Howard’s research, rather than assigning it a definitive start date. What does it teach?

The subject matter goes beyond anatomy and contraception. Coverage describes videos and discussions about sexually transmitted diseases, consent, women’s pleasure, respecting women, healthy relationships, homophobia and toxic masculinity. Howard described the project’s scope to Her Campus as “issues like masculinity, sexuality, consent, relationships,” alongside practical skills such as “decision making, communication, negotiation.”

That breadth matters to the project’s framing: sex education is treated not only as information about bodies, but also as a set of interpersonal questions—how people communicate, set boundaries and treat one another. The profiles describe those as the account’s themes; they do not establish that its videos form a complete or formal health curriculum.

How do the videos use comedy to challenge manosphere messages?

The project’s approach is to put educational ideas into quick, approachable social-video formats. Fast Company describes skits on consent, toxic masculinity and homophobia, as well as a recurring prompt that asks whether a statement is “That’s what’s up!” or “What’s up with that?” Examples reported include setting boundaries with a partner and asking a partner about their day. Her Campus also describes exercise-themed jokes about respecting women and videos that use humor to deliver sex-education points.

Comedy is the delivery method, not evidence of effectiveness. Christopher Maichin told Fast Company, “I think the greatest part of it is that they are getting education without even knowing it.” That captures the creators’ theory: a viewer may be more willing to watch a funny clip in a social feed than a conventional lesson. But a profile quotation or a popular video cannot show, on its own, whether a viewer learned something or changed how they act.

In that sense, “countering the manosphere” describes the project’s purpose and editorial contrast. The coverage presents Sex Ed for Guys as offering positive alternatives around masculinity, consent and respect; it does not demonstrate that the account has reduced exposure to manosphere content or reversed its influence.

What do the reported audience figures show?

Published profiles offer snapshots from different dates, not a consistent analytics series. They should not be added together, treated as current platform counts or used to calculate a growth rate.

Reported figure Source and date What the report says
55.8K followers The Colby Echo, November 2023 Historical figure reported by the student newspaper.
More than 100,000 followers; “millions of likes” Her Campus, circa 2025 The profile also attributes to Howard a report that 60% of followers were male and aged 16–24; this is a reported audience description, not independently verified platform analytics.
More than 117,000 followers Fast Company, March 28, 2025 The article also reported that two popular videos had exceeded 11 million and 3 million views, respectively, at publication.

These figures indicate that the account attracted attention at the times the articles appeared. They do not establish its present audience size, how many people watched a video to completion, or what viewers took away from it.

What can—and can’t—be concluded about its impact?

The coverage documents an educational intention, examples of content and reported audience reactions. The cited profiles and episode page do not present a controlled or independent evaluation measuring changes in viewers’ knowledge, attitudes or behavior. Nor do they establish that the project has measurably changed young men’s exposure to manosphere material.

It is most accurate to understand Sex Ed for Guys as an effort to make conversations about sex, relationships and masculinity visible in the social feeds young people already use. The format may make these topics approachable, but it is not a substitute for qualified sexual-health instruction or individualized health advice.
