In a November 2021 report, PerthNow identified the TikTok creator behind the “foot prisons” headline as Alice, who used the handle @alicellani. She said she had stopped wearing shoes, including in public, and described the change as helping her feel better. Those are her personal claims—not evidence that going barefoot improves health for everyone.
Who was the TikTok creator in the headline?
PerthNow’s November 25, 2021, report described Alice as an Arizona local and mother of one, and identified her TikTok account as @alicellani. The report did not provide a verified full name. It said her post had more than 4.4 million views and 424,000 likes, and described her account as having 631,000 followers at that time. Those figures are historical, not current account statistics.
The report appeared amid a separate discussion about barefoot time for preschoolers at Inglewood Primary School, which planned to introduce it in 2022. That school policy was context for the news coverage; it does not establish anything about Alice’s own parenting or school.
Why did she stop wearing shoes?
Alice said she had experienced severe foot pain and that it had stopped after she gave up shoes. PerthNow quoted her saying, “I used to have severe foot pain. Now I do not.” She also said, “I feel more awake and more alive.” These statements describe her experience as reported in 2021; the article does not establish that going barefoot caused the change or that others should expect the same result.

Does going barefoot have proven benefits?
The 2021 PerthNow report included differing views in the context of children’s barefoot play. Murdoch University early childhood education director Sandra Hesterman described barefoot play as longstanding best practice. Burke Hugo, then head of podiatric medicine and surgery at the University of Western Australia, said that barefoot time in a safe environment would not hurt children and might offer freedom, but that there was “no plausible evidence” of benefits over well-fitted shoes. Those comments are attributed views in a news report, not a comprehensive review of evidence or advice for every person.
A 2023 Green Matters interview with a podiatrist and barefoot influencer discusses possible foot-strength benefits for some people alongside cautions. The interview emphasizes that suitability can vary with foot type, age, activity, surface, and injury exposure. It does not make Alice’s personal outcome a general medical finding.

Barefoot walking or shoes: what changes?
The practical difference is not simply “good” versus “bad.” Bare feet meet the ground directly; footwear adds a layer between skin and the surface. The 2023 interview distinguishes casual walking from running and trail use, and notes that a surface that feels forgiving is not interchangeable with hard pavement or very soft sand. Individual foot shape and support needs also matter.

What the “foot prisons” label does—and doesn’t—tell you
The phrase is a provocative description of Alice’s preference, not a medical diagnosis or a reliable guide to whether a particular person should wear shoes. Her story is best understood as a personal account that drew attention online: the reported views and likes show its reach in 2021, while the evidence cited in the coverage does not prove a general health benefit from going barefoot.
