NBC Sports showed footage of Tiger Woods’s 2021 crash while discussing his separate March 2026 crash in Florida. During the same Houston Open broadcast, Dan Hicks corrected the mistake and apologized. The word “despicable” came from one online commenter quoted in coverage; it is not evidence of a measured or representative public response.
What NBC got wrong
On March 27, 2026, Woods was involved in a rollover crash on Jupiter Island, Florida, and arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. The next day, during NBC Sports’ coverage of the Texas Children’s Houston Open, studio reporter Paul Burmeister discussed that crash while the broadcast showed images from Woods’s 2021 crash in Southern California. Sports Illustrated’s account says NBC addressed the error later in the broadcast, as the final group played the 14th hole.
Dan Hicks delivered the correction and apology on air. As reproduced by Sports Illustrated, Hicks said: “We want to take this time to make a correction. Before we came on the air today, our studio inadvertently showed the incorrect picture of the car crash Tiger Woods was in. It was another previous car crash. It was not the correct one—the latest one that was yesterday. We apologize for that and just want to straighten that out before we go any further.” Read the quoted correction.
Why some coverage called the mistake “despicable”
Operation Sports quoted a social-media commenter who described NBC’s mistake as “despicable,” alongside other online criticism of the network’s execution. That establishes that at least one commenter used the word; it does not show that most viewers agreed. The available coverage provides no representative survey or reliable count of audience reaction. “Mass backlash” is a headline characterization, not a quantified finding. Operation Sports’ report gives examples of the comments.

What happened in Woods’s case
The March arrest was an initial DUI accusation, not the final case outcome. In a report dated September 2, 2026, the Associated Press said Woods pleaded no contest to reckless driving and refusing to submit to testing after the crash. AP reported that his driver’s license was suspended for five years and that he was fined $1,500. A no-contest plea is not an admission of guilt, though AP explains it is treated as a conviction in the criminal justice system. See AP’s report on the plea.
