Thunderbolts* is a character-led Marvel team-up whose appeal lies in watching damaged, discarded figures learn to depend on one another. Its action is most effective when it grows out of that uneasy alliance, and its emotional core gives this unlikely team more weight than a routine superhero mission.
What is Thunderbolts* about?
The film brings together Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster and John Walker for a dangerous mission. Disney describes them as an unconventional team; they are not polished heroes arriving with a shared purpose so much as people with difficult histories forced into the same crisis. The story’s basic tension is whether they can cooperate before their differences make the danger worse.

Director Jake Schreier called them “a group of misfit toys that have been essentially thrown away at the beginning of the movie and have to figure out if they can work together to get themselves out of that mess.” That idea gives the ensemble its emotional shape: belonging is not a reward for being uncomplicated, but something the characters have to risk building together.
Does the action serve the characters?
The film’s strongest action works as more than a pause for spectacle. The clashes and close calls put pressure on the team’s fragile trust, reveal how differently its members respond to danger, and give the mission narrative momentum. That connection matters in a crowded superhero genre: action can be loud without making a story feel more urgent, but here the character conflict gives the set pieces a reason to matter.

#1 Best Overall
- After being ensnared in a death trap, an unconventional team of antiheroes assembles and embarks on a dangerous mission. Forced to confront the darkest corners of their pasts, will the group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and prevail?
Schreier described his aim this way: “You want to feel like that action is coming from a story perspective and it’s all working together to build a narrative.” The movie’s character-first approach makes the action feel consequential even when the team is still figuring out how to function.
Why the antiheroes make the film moving
Yelena, Bucky, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster and Walker each bring a different kind of baggage to the group. Their histories and personalities create friction, but also give the ensemble its warmth: solidarity here is not instant or sentimental. The characters have to make room for one another while carrying the consequences of their own pasts.
Rank #2
- Can this disparate group of antiheroes overcome their difficult pasts and form a real team capable of stopping the Void and saving the world?
That focus makes Thunderbolts* feel like an outing for overlooked antiheroes rather than a simple victory lap for familiar superheroes. Its emotional appeal comes from seeing people who are used to being treated as problems begin to recognize something valuable in one another. The ensemble is the point, and the film is most affecting when it allows that connection to develop alongside the danger.

Yes, especially if you prefer superhero stories that let character relationships carry as much weight as the action. The movie offers an appealing change of emphasis: a messy team learning to trust one another, with the mission giving that process urgency. Viewers mainly looking for a showcase of grand, self-contained action may find its emotional focus less central to their interests, but the character work is what makes this team-up stick.
