Thunderbolts* works best as a bruised, character-focused team-up rather than a nonstop superhero spectacle. Its story brings a group of disillusioned antiheroes together under pressure, with Yelena Belova at the emotional center. The result has real warmth and an appealingly mismatched ensemble, though its shifts between sincerity and glib humor do not always land. It is relatively self-contained for much of its runtime, according to one reviewer, but that is not a guarantee that every viewer will find all the surrounding MCU context irrelevant.

What is Thunderbolts* about?

Disney describes the film as a mission involving Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster and John Walker, a collection of antiheroes and castoffs drawn into a trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. The danger forces them into a confrontation with their pasts. That premise gives the movie a different starting point from a conventional team assembled around shared ideals: these characters arrive wary, damaged and not especially eager to trust one another.

Jake Schreier directed the film, which Disney lists as an action-adventure/superhero movie. The U.S. release was May 2, 2025; the official U.S. listing gives it a PG-13 rating and a runtime of 2 hours 6 minutes (126 minutes). Disney’s U.K. page lists May 1, reflecting a one-day territory difference. Disney’s official film page

Does the ensemble make the team convincing?

The strongest case for the film is its attention to what these characters carry into the mission. In his Associated Press review, Jake Coyle highlights malaise, guilt and shame, and sees the spectacle as most effective when it grows out of the characters’ emotional conflicts. He also singles out Florence Pugh’s screen presence and the cast’s strength, while noting that the movie can feel earnest in one moment and glib in the next. Coyle rated it three stars out of four; that is his assessment, not a measure of critical consensus. The Associated Press review

Thunderbolts* - 4K + Blu-ray + Digital
  • After being ensnared in a death trap, an unconventional team of antiheroes assembles and embarks on a dangerous mission. Forced to confront the darkest corners of their pasts, will the group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and prevail?

The cast includes Pugh as Yelena, Sebastian Stan as Bucky, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as John Walker, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina, and Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer and Wendell Edward Pierce. The setup gives the performers a useful tension to play: a team may be necessary for the mission without becoming a family overnight.

Schreier told D23 that the characters’ relative unfamiliarity offered room to take the story in different directions, with less expectation attached to them. That freedom is reflected in the film’s emphasis on a group that does not begin as a polished, mutually supportive unit. D23’s interview with director Jake Schreier

Marvel Studios: Thunderbolts* (2025) [Blu-ray]
  • Can this disparate group of antiheroes overcome their difficult pasts and form a real team capable of stopping the Void and saving the world?

Is it more character drama or superhero spectacle?

The film has action, but the critical case for it rests more on interpersonal friction and emotional vulnerability than on spectacle alone. Coyle’s review describes a tender character story and argues that the larger set pieces work when they follow from that story. Viewers looking for a team movie built chiefly around escalating battles may find the balance less satisfying; those interested in seeing damaged characters test whether they can cooperate have a clearer reason to watch.

The tonal balance is a genuine qualification. Coyle finds the film moving in places, but says its earnestness can sit awkwardly beside glibness. That makes the humor and emotional beats a matter of taste rather than an unqualified strength.

How much MCU homework does the main story require?

The Atlantic reviewer describes the film as surprisingly disconnected from the wider MCU until its post-credit scenes, and as an effective misfit-ensemble action movie. That is one critic’s experience, not a promise that viewers can ignore every earlier appearance or connection. The safest expectation is that the central team-and-mission story is relatively accessible, while viewers who follow the wider franchise may get more context from familiar characters and should stay through the credits if they want the post-credit material.
