The film introduces Bob Reynolds, played by Lewis Pullman, as the Sentry: a superpowered figure Valentina describes as more powerful than all the Avengers combined. But that is her claim, not an objective ranking established across the Marvel universe. Bob’s power comes with a dangerous complication: he fears losing control and unleashing the Void.
Who is the new hero in Thunderbolts*?
The new hero is Bob Reynolds, a man caught up in Valentina’s experiments who becomes the Sentry. Lewis Pullman plays Bob, whose transformation gives him extraordinary abilities and makes him central to the team’s attempt to survive Valentina’s plans. The film’s visual-effects studio, Industrial Light & Magic, describes Bob taking both the Sentry and Void forms in its production account.
Thunderbolts*, directed by Jake Schreier, was released by Disney on May 2, 2025. Disney lists the film as PG-13 with a runtime of 2 hours 6 minutes. Its official film page includes the cast and home-release information.
How does Bob become Sentry and the Void?
Valentina’s experimental serum gives Bob his powers. In the film, he is the sole survivor of the experiment described in TIME’s explainer of Bob, Sentry and the Void. Valentina wants to present the Sentry as proof of her achievement, but Bob’s transformation is not a simple origin story about gaining a new ability: he is frightened by the possibility that he cannot control what he has become.

The Void is the destructive side of that transformation. When it emerges, people seem to vanish into shadows and are drawn into a maze-like reality shaped by their worst memories. The danger is therefore both physical and psychological: the Void threatens others while trapping them in experiences built from their own fears.
Is Sentry really more powerful than all the Avengers?
That wording comes from Valentina in the film. TIME reports her description of Sentry as more powerful than all the Avengers rolled into one. It should be understood as a character’s claim, not a settled, canon-wide power ranking. The film shows Sentry as extraordinarily powerful, but it does not establish a measurable comparison that proves he outranks every Avenger in every context.

How does Yelena help stop the Void?
Bob’s fear of losing control is central to the crisis, and resolving it takes more than overpowering him. Yelena reaches him within the Void’s memory-shaped nightmare and helps him confront it, allowing the people trapped there to be freed. Director Jake Schreier described the film’s central idea in a D23 interview published May 2, 2025: “In this world it’s really about saving yourself and saving each other.”
What happens at the end of Thunderbolts*?
After the team survives the immediate crisis, Valentina publicly presents them as the New Avengers. The mid-credits scene shows the group’s new public identity. In the post-credits scene, set 14 months later, the team’s disagreement about using the Avengers name leads into a reveal: a ship bearing the Fantastic Four insignia appears near Earth. The Los Angeles Times breakdown of the credits scenes identifies the ship as the ending’s significant reveal. It signals a connection, but does not confirm what a future film will do with it.

How the film’s Sentry relates to Marvel comics
The film’s character shares a name and themes with the comics’ Sentry, but the two continuities should not be treated as identical. Marvel’s history of Bob Reynolds says the character debuted in Sentry (2000) #1, created by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee, and describes the division between Bob’s civilian identity, Sentry persona and the Void. TIME discusses the film’s serum origin separately from the comics’ origin, underscoring that the movie is telling its own version.
