What happens in Bucky’s cameo?
During the main story of Captain America: Brave New World, Bucky visits Sam at the hospital as they wait while Joaquin Torres undergoes surgery. He reassures Sam about Torres and about Sam’s role as Captain America. When Sam asks whether speechwriters helped with Bucky’s remarks, Bucky says he has a campaign event and heads out. That exchange makes the appearance more than a reunion between former partners: it gives Bucky a political-status update. His campaign event suggests he is pursuing public office, though the scene does not spell out the details of his campaign.
How does the cameo connect to Thunderbolts*?
Bucky’s mention of a campaign event is the immediate setup: it signals a new direction for a character once known as the Winter Soldier. TheWrap described the political turn as a possible setup for Thunderbolts*. Separately, D23’s official team coverage includes Bucky in the ensemble alongside Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster and John Walker.

Together, those details connect Bucky’s story to the next ensemble appearance, but they do not establish that he recruited or selected the team. The film shows his political step; the official lineup confirms his place among the Thunderbolts.
A team of people whose plans went sideways
Director Jake Schreier offered a broader way to think about the group in a D23 interview: “I think they’re sort of your least anticipated group of Marvel heroes [laughs]. But in that way, they’re like us. There’s something that everyone can relate to in all of these characters. They’re people who have found themselves in a place they didn’t expect to be, or maybe things didn’t work out for them quite in the way that they thought. Is Bucky in the post-credits scene?
No. Bucky’s hospital visit takes place in the main film. The separate post-credits scene shows Sam visiting Samuel Sterns at the Raft. Sterns warns Sam about other heroes and other worlds, hinting at larger multiverse stakes. The Los Angeles Times’ explanation of the scene reproduces Sterns’s dialogue: “All you heroes protecting the world,” says Sterns from his cell, “you think you’re the only ones? Do you think this is the only world? We’ll see what happens when you have to protect this place from the others.” That is film dialogue, not a real-world statement by an actor or filmmaker.
The distinction is straightforward: Bucky’s scene advances his character and ties him to the Thunderbolts* ensemble; Sterns’s stinger points toward broader threats.
