Three Kings Day, also called Día de los Reyes, is the January 6 celebration associated with Epiphany. It commemorates the manifestation of Christ, with the visit of the Magi at its center in Catholic tradition. Customs differ among communities: documented examples include children receiving gifts, family gatherings, public parades and sharing a cake called roscón or rosca de Reyes.
What is Three Kings Day?
Three Kings Day is a popular name for the January 6 observance associated with Epiphany. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops puts the biblical focus this way: “The Epiphany marks the arrival of visitors, identified in Scripture as the magi, to the place where Jesus was born.” (USCCB, “January 6”.) In Catholic tradition, the Magi’s visit and adoration are a central theme.
Epiphany means manifestation: the celebration of Christ being revealed to the world. The Vatican describes it as one of Christianity’s oldest feasts and says January 6 was the principal date for celebrating the Savior’s entry into human history until the fourth century. The feast’s liturgical themes are not identical everywhere; the Vatican also notes Jesus’s baptism in the Jordan and the miracle at Cana, especially in Eastern Churches. (Vatican, “January 6: The Epiphany of the Lord,” January 6, 2026.)
What does the Bible say about the Three Kings?
The familiar phrase “Three Kings” reflects later tradition, not details supplied by the biblical account. Scripture calls the visitors magi; it does not give their names or nationalities. The Smithsonian notes this distinction while documenting the customary names Gaspar, Melchior and Balthazar. (Smithsonian National Museum of American History, “The Three Kings”; Smithsonian American Art Museum, “Los Reyes Magos”.)

Their gifts also acquired symbolic meaning in Christian interpretation. The USCCB discusses the traditional symbolism of the gifts, but those interpretations should be distinguished from what the biblical narrative explicitly identifies about the visitors.
How do Three Kings Day traditions vary?
There is no single custom shared by every Christian community or every Spanish-speaking country. Smithsonian accounts describe celebrations in Spain, Puerto Rico and many Latin American countries, including gift-giving, family gatherings and parades. These are documented examples, not a universal checklist. (Smithsonian Institution, “Los Reyes Magos: The Three Kings,” January 6, 2014.)
Gifts and preparations for the Magi
In the custom described by the Smithsonian, children may leave boxes of hay and bowls of water for the kings’ horses on the night before Three Kings Day. Children then receive gifts on January 6. The Smithsonian also describes Puerto Rican families gathering and children receiving gifts from the Three Kings. Local practice varies, so this should not be taken as a rule for all Puerto Rican families or other communities. (Smithsonian Institution; Smithsonian American Art Museum.)
Parades and family gatherings
Public parades and family gatherings are among the celebrations documented by the Smithsonian for Spain, Puerto Rico and many Latin American countries. The available accounts establish examples of these customs, rather than a comprehensive comparison of how each country observes the day.

Roscón or rosca de Reyes
A round cake called roscón de Reyes or rosca de Reyes is another tradition noted by the Smithsonian. Its description includes dried fruit, powdered sugar and a figurine hidden inside. The source records the food tradition; it does not establish that the cake or its ingredients are the same in every region or household. (Smithsonian Institution, January 6, 2014.)

The historical accounts available here give broad context rather than a detailed chronology for each regional custom. The Smithsonian traces veneration of the Magi to medieval Europe, where the figures appeared in Nativity scenes, and documents Puerto Rican family observances today. That framing links a longstanding religious image with living celebrations, but does not establish exactly when or how each local practice began. (Smithsonian American Art Museum, “Los Reyes Magos”.)

The religious meaning of Epiphany is broader than a single folk custom: the Vatican describes Christ’s manifestation to the world, while noting that churches place differing emphasis on the Magi, Jesus’s baptism and Cana. This helps explain why January 6 can be both a liturgical feast and, in some communities, a day shaped by gifts, food and public celebration.
