Voice actor Roger Craig Smith says his challenge was to make that damage unmistakable without losing the connection to the more sarcastic Kyle players knew from the first game.
Why is Kyle Crane darker in Dying Light: The Beast?
In a May 11, 2025 interview with Insider Gaming, Smith called the returning character “a much darker Kyle.” He tied the change to the trauma Kyle endured at the antagonist’s hands, describing a performance that had to show how much the character had suffered while still feeling like the same person many years later.

Techland’s official story premise supplies the context: Kyle was captured by the Baron and subjected to years of experiments. He escapes with both human and zombie DNA, then struggles to control his “inner beast” as he pursues revenge. The game’s official page lists September 18, 2025 as its launch date for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
What changed in Kyle’s voice and personality?
A heavier, more strained sound
Techland’s August 27, 2025 developer blog describes Kyle’s voice at the beginning as “heavy, strained, worn down by years of suffering.” The studio says the voice shifts as he recovers and grows stronger, with more of his true self re-emerging. That is Techland’s account of the intended vocal arc: damage is present at the outset, but it is not the character’s only note.

The earlier sarcasm still matters
Smith contrasted this version with the more sarcastic Kyle of the first Dying Light. “Dying Light 1’s Kyle is more sarcastic, and it’s fun to try and pepper some of that in,” he said in the same interview. The sarcasm is a thread of continuity, not a claim that the character remains unchanged: Smith’s stated aim was to retain something recognizable while expressing what the intervening years have done to him.
How does the performance connect the two versions of Kyle?
Smith’s account points to a balance rather than a clean break. Kyle’s new circumstances call for a darker, more worn performance; traces of his old humor help preserve a link to the earlier character. Techland’s description adds a progression within The Beast itself, as his voice changes alongside his recovery and renewed strength. Together, these details frame the voice as part of the character arc: the damage shapes Kyle, while the returning traits signal that it has not erased him.

Where to find the game
Techland announced PS5 physical editions with Super Rare Games on September 18, 2026. The announcement describes a retail edition with the game and a manual, a limited edition that adds a sticker, metallic slipcover, and numbered release, and an Anniversary Edition pairing the game with physical items inspired by Castor Woods. Its stated preorder period ends October 16, 2026, and physical delivery is not supported in some regions.
