The room was a set—not the original dorm—and it was one of several places from Zuckerberg’s life recreated for the party.
What was in the birthday photo?
Zuckerberg captioned the image, “Harvard dorm where I launched Facebook (with special guest).” The guest was Gates. GeekWire reported that a Gates Ventures representative confirmed the image was real, amid concerns about fabricated images made with AI. That confirmation is attributed to GeekWire; it is not an independent verification here.
Why was the Harvard dorm recreated?
Zuckerberg’s wife, Priscilla Chan, arranged recreations of places from his life for the celebration. In his broader birthday post, Zuckerberg wrote: “Grateful for my first 40 years! Priscilla threw me a little party and recreated a bunch of places I lived in the early days.”
GeekWire’s May 14, 2024, report listed a childhood bedroom, first apartment, an office associated with work to fight competitors, the Harvard dorm room and a Harvard Square pizza place among the recreated settings. Together, the spaces traced different chapters of Zuckerberg’s life rather than presenting the dorm as a standalone historical display.
