Koko B. Ware was more than the colorful “Birdman” who carried a parrot to the ring. He came to WWE after years on the regional circuit, sang a track for a WWE album, teamed with Owen Hart, and later remembered the loss of his macaw Frankie as losing a child. Here are the career details behind the familiar entrance.
Who was Koko B. Ware before he became the Birdman?
Ware was from Union City, Tennessee. WWE’s official profile says he began wrestling in the late 1970s and worked regional territories including Memphis, Dallas, Louisiana, and Florida before making his WWE debut in August 1986.
His WWE presentation stood out for its colorful ring attire and high energy. The company says his reception was especially strong with younger fans. Its profile lists him at 5 ft 7 in and 228 lb, though it does not show when those biographical figures were published.
What was Koko B. Ware famous for?
Ware became known as “The Birdman,” a nickname and character built around an exuberant entrance and his macaw, Frankie. WWE describes Frankie as Ware’s sidekick; the bird’s recognizable presence helped make the act memorable. The persona was not his only career distinction: his first major WWE victory, according to the company, came against Nikolai Volkoff on Saturday Night’s Main Event in November 1986.

Who was Koko B. Ware’s parrot Frankie?
Frankie was Ware’s macaw and a central companion in the Birdman act. In a WWE interview published September 21, 2005, Ware recalled coming home from church to find his rented Tennessee home on fire. He said faulty wiring caused the fire, and that a firefighter heard Frankie calling to be let out. Ware said he had owned Frankie for about 15 years.
Ware described the loss plainly: “Still, it was like losing a kid.” That is Ware’s recollection of a personal tragedy, not an independently investigated account.
