The title’s official history also includes reigns that lasted hundreds of days—and a modern run that surpassed the celebrated 1980s records.
WWE’s origin story begins with Pat Patterson in Rio
WWE dates the championship’s beginning to September 1979 and lists Patterson as its first champion, with his reign starting on September 1. WWE’s official Pat Patterson biography says: “In September 1979, Patterson won a tournament in Rio de Janeiro to become the first Intercontinental Champion.” The company repeats that account in its 40th-anniversary article.
That is WWE’s account of how the title was created, not independent confirmation that a tournament physically took place. The available sources do not settle that question. The distinction matters: Patterson’s status as the first champion is reflected in WWE’s official lineage, while the Rio tournament detail is part of WWE’s origin story.
Several famous 1980s reigns stretched beyond a year
WWE’s title-history page records a series of unusually long reigns from the championship’s early decades. Its displayed durations and dates are:

| Champion | Dates listed by WWE | Duration listed by WWE |
|---|---|---|
| Pedro Morales | November 23, 1981–January 22, 1983 | 424 days |
| Randy Savage | February 8, 1986–March 29, 1987 | 413 days |
| The Honky Tonk Man | June 2, 1987–August 29, 1988 | 453 days |
These figures are WWE’s published durations, not independently recalculated totals. They show why the belt’s 1980s history is often remembered through long-running champions: all three reigns lasted more than 400 days according to the company’s records.
Gunther’s modern reign exceeded those 1980s runs
The same WWE title-history page lists Gunther’s reign from June 10, 2022, to April 6, 2024, at 666 days. That is longer than the page’s listed durations for The Honky Tonk Man, Morales, and Savage, placing a modern champion ahead of three of the title’s most striking earlier runs by WWE’s measure.

WWE’s title-history page is useful for checking who held the championship and the dates the company assigns to each reign. The dates and durations cited here should be read as WWE’s official record, rather than as a separate statistical audit. For a broader documentary view of the title, the most revealing contrast is between its 1979 origin story, its celebrated long reigns in the 1980s, and Gunther’s record-setting modern run.
