Her preparation drew on both personal familiarity and research. Zapata told People en Español that she grew up listening to Selena and took dance classes for many years as a child. The same profile noted the connection between that background and her work on the role.
A Las Estrellas report says Zapata also consulted written documents, interviews with Selena, and videos. She identified empathy as essential to acting, saying: “Sobre todo la compasión, es la herramienta principal de los actores, te obliga a ponerte en los zapatos del otro y mirar con empatía y compasión lo que está pasando la otra persona.” In translation: “Above all, compassion is an actor’s main tool; it forces you to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and look with empathy and compassion at what the other person is going through.”

Her words in Spanish were: “La conversación de hoy es que el trabajo que hacemos y las narrativas que contamos no deberían estar separadas de nuestras luchas sociales.” In translation: “Today’s conversation is that the work we do and the narratives we tell should not be separated from our social struggles.”
She returned to the importance of perspective in a 2023 Time Out México interview about Horario Estelar, calling for more diverse voices: “Es necesario diversificar las voces que escuchamos porque cada uno habla desde la posición en el mundo en la que estamos.” In translation: “It is necessary to diversify the voices we listen to, because each of us speaks from the position we occupy in the world.”
