They’re Here is a 25-minute documentary short about Minneapolis during the January 2026 immigration enforcement surge. Directed by Laura Poitras and Rachel Lauren Mueller, it combines footage from the filmmakers, witnesses and residents with the story of a volunteer network tracking reported ICE movements. Its horror-inflected style puts fear at the center without leaving documentary evidence behind.
What is They’re Here about?
The film follows the atmosphere of fear and the forms of resistance that emerged in Minneapolis during the January 2026 immigration enforcement surge. The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) describes a volunteer resistance organization using citizen reports to map ICE movements, alongside accounts from people living through the enforcement activity. The film is a United States production, with English and Spanish listed as its spoken languages. IDFA’s film listing gives the catalog runtime as 25 minutes.
One participant, identified as Edén Villa, is using a pseudonym. IDFA’s synopsis describes Villa’s account of traveling to work hidden in a car trunk. The detail makes the danger personal, but it should not be read as evidence that every person in the film faced the same circumstances.
How does the film document ICE activity?
Poitras and Mueller’s film brings together footage shot on the ground with recordings gathered from witnesses, victims and residents. The material includes dashcam, bodycam and smartphone video. Rather than relying on a single camera or a detached overview, it draws on recordings made from different positions in the community and places them alongside people’s testimony.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That approach also makes the act of recording part of the story. Community members report ICE sightings, and volunteers use those reports to map movements. The film presents this as community reporting and counter-surveillance: a way for residents to share information about enforcement activity. It does not make every report equivalent to independently verified evidence, so viewers should distinguish the film’s documented footage from the reports and accounts it presents.
Why does They’re Here use horror and dystopian imagery?
The directors use horror conventions and dystopian framing to convey how threatening everyday life can feel under the conditions the film documents. In an interview with The Guardian, Poitras said, “One of the things we’re trying to do with this film is put the audience in a position of terror and fear.” The form is not a claim that the film is fiction; it is a cinematic means of making fear felt while presenting documentary footage and testimony.

Poitras has also described cinema as a way to make viewers approach a situation differently. In Racket, she said, “Cinema has the potential to communicate a situation like this uniquely,” explaining that the filmmakers wanted to “denormalize the violence.” The film’s tension comes from that pairing: a deliberately unsettling style alongside material rooted in recorded events and residents’ accounts.
How does the film balance visibility and participant safety?
Documenting enforcement can make activity visible to viewers, while making participants visible can expose them to risk. Reporting by The Guardian says residents’ identities are obscured; Racket reports that Mueller said the central immigrant participant would remain anonymous. Edén Villa is a pseudonym, and the trunk sequence is connected in reporting to source safety.

These choices are part of how the film handles the tension between bearing witness and protecting people who speak or record. Anonymity is a safeguard documented in connection with particular participants; it should not be taken to mean that everyone involved had identical risks or protections.
Who made the film, and where has it screened?
They’re Here is directed by Laura Poitras and Rachel Lauren Mueller. Mueller is also the cinematographer. She told MPR News, “I was out filming every single day for almost three months.” MPR reported the film’s Venice premiere in September 2026.
