Prehistoric Planet offers a vivid look at prehistoric life, with computer-generated animals placed in carefully imagined Cretaceous environments. Its images make a strong case for the series’ visual realism—but “most realistic ever” is an editorial judgment, not a title awarded through a published scientific comparison. And despite its headline, the Gizmodo gallery’s introduction says it contains 18 CGI shots, while the headline says 13 images.
What the gallery shows—and what its headline means
Isaac Schultz’s May 29, 2022 Gizmodo gallery highlights images from Prehistoric Planet, Apple TV’s natural-history series. Its examples span different kinds of prehistoric animals, not 13 distinct dinosaur species. The accessible gallery entries identify Hatzegopteryx, Carnotaurus, Pachyrhinosaurus, Beelzebufo, Quetzalcoatlus, Olorotitan, Mosasaurus, Corythoraptor, Triceratops, Deinocheirus, and Alcione.
“Dinosaur” is used loosely in the headline: Beelzebufo was a frog; Hatzegopteryx, Quetzalcoatlus, and Alcione were pterosaurs; and Mosasaurus was a marine reptile. The gallery’s headline says 13 images, but its introduction says readers can see 18 computer-generated shots. The accessible text does not explain the discrepancy, so the two counts should not be treated as equivalent.
What makes the images feel convincing
The series presents more than isolated creatures: its images place animals in environments and suggest how they might move, feed, or interact. That ecological framing helps make a prehistoric scene feel like a living world rather than a collection of computer-generated models.

Anatomy and appearance
The gallery’s examples include a Corythoraptor depicted with blue plumage and a young Triceratops in a forest. Such choices reflect artistic reconstructions informed by scientific work, but fossils do not preserve every detail of an animal’s color or appearance. A persuasive image is not proof that every visible feature is known with certainty.
Behavior and habitat
Other captions describe two Pachyrhinosaurus in snow, a Mosasaurus resting as smaller sea animals clean it, and juvenile Alcione preparing for flight. These are scenes the series depicts, not a systematic demonstration that every behavior shown can be established directly from fossil evidence.

A production built across disciplines
Gizmodo reported that more than 1,500 people contributed to the production, including paleoartists, CGI artists, paleontologists, cinematographers, and narrator Sir David Attenborough. That is the publication’s 2022 account of the production headcount, rather than a separately identified official statistic.
Apple TV Press credits BBC Studios Natural History Unit as producer and MPC for the visual effects, describing them this way: “The series is produced by the world-renowned team at BBC Studios Natural History Unit with support from the photorealistic visual effects of MPC (“The Lion King,” “The Jungle Book”) applied to concept art created by Jellyfish Pictures (“The Book of Boba Fett,” “Spirit: Untamed”).”

How to judge the “most realistic” claim
Realism in a dinosaur image is not a single measurable quality. A useful way to assess the gallery is to consider several things separately:
- Anatomy and covering: Does the animal’s shape and any depicted plumage make a plausible reconstruction, while acknowledging what fossils cannot establish?
- Animal identity: Is the subject actually a dinosaur, or another prehistoric animal such as a pterosaur, frog, or marine reptile?
- Behavior and ecology: Does the scene communicate a plausible relationship between an animal and its surroundings, without mistaking a dramatic reconstruction for direct fossil evidence?
- Visual effects: Do the creatures appear integrated into their environments? That is a production achievement, distinct from proving every scientific detail.
The gallery offers examples for discussion, but it does not compare productions under a controlled method or establish an objective winner over every earlier dinosaur depiction. “Most realistic ever” is best read as a strong critical description of the images, not a scientific ranking.
