Court filings and later reporting show that she had sought a temporary restraining order against her estranged husband, Jason Cachuela, and that a one-year order of protection was approved two days before her death.

Contemporaneous coverage reported that Theresa Cachuela was killed near Pearlridge Center on December 22, 2023. She was 33 and a mother of three. Jason Cachuela was later found dead in Waipahu. HawaiiNewsNow reported the killing and the subsequent discovery of Jason Cachuela.
What did Theresa Cachuela report in her court filing?
In a December 2023 report, HawaiiNewsNow described allegations in Theresa’s temporary restraining order filing, including threats of suicide, stalking, and an episode in which Jason held a knife to his neck. These are allegations reported from her filing, not findings established here as fact.
HawaiiNewsNow reproduced this sentence from her statement: “I am doing this to protect myself, my children and to hopefully get him the help he needs.” Read the contemporaneous report.

When was the temporary restraining order filed and the protection order approved?
Reporting by Civil Beat describes the following sequence:

The temporary order and the later one-year order of protection were separate stages in the reported court process. Neither the existence of an order nor the reported confiscation of registered firearms establishes what enforcement or protection was possible in every circumstance.

What is known about the firearm?
In October 2025, Civil Beat reported, based on an investigative report, that the firearm used in the killing was unserialized. That reporting does not establish how Jason Cachuela obtained it or explain its relationship, if any, to the five registered firearms confiscated when he was served with the temporary order. What has been reported about earlier police contacts?
