Ashley Stock described grief after her daughter Stevie’s death as something she was letting out gradually, rather than all at once. In a statement reproduced by Access, Stock compared it to gently twisting open a bottle so built-up pressure could escape without everything erupting.
What Ashley Stock said about grieving
Stock’s metaphor, as quoted by Access from her Instagram post, was: “I let it out a bit at a time, like when you gently twist the lid off a liter soda bottle…releasing the built up pressure a little at a time to keep it from exploding all over the place. I guess it’s like that. I’m twisting the lid on my grief gently. Because if I release it all at once, I don’t see how I could possibly survive.”
Access also reported that Stock described feeling relief that Stevie was at peace alongside intense pain. She said her faith did not take that pain away. Those statements describe what Stock shared publicly at the time; they do not make a short post a complete account of her grief.
What happened to Stock’s daughter
Access reported that Stevie died at age three on May 27, 2020, after being diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a brain cancer. The report said the family chose to bring her home. These details are reported by Access and are not independent medical verification. Access’s report

What public accounts of grief can—and cannot—show
A 2025 peer-reviewed study of first-person grief narratives on TikTok describes how public posts may foster community, empathy and validation, while also exposing people sharing grief to negative comments, misinterpretation and policing of how they grieve. That broader finding is context about online storytelling, not evidence about Stock’s reasons for posting or her personal experience. A separate 2020 qualitative study examined parents bereaved by drug-related deaths and identified themes involving processing emotions, proactive coping, and giving and receiving support. Its participants’ circumstances differ from Stock’s, so its findings should not be applied to her. Neither study establishes a universal sequence or timeline for grief.
