Abercrumbie described Mary Jo as someone who looks after other people and can turn her attention to their problems rather than her own unresolved concerns. In the episode, papers arrive and bring Mary Jo’s past back into focus. Those observations are Abercrumbie’s account of the character and story, not a more specific explanation of the episode’s resolution.
Mary Jo’s life beyond the office
Abercrumbie also spoke about wanting Mary Jo’s world outside work to include family and friends from her Black community. The interview describes a dinner party and friendships that become family. As she put it, “I wanted to show that she had family and friends that were from her world that reflected her, meaning from the African American, Black, community that she has outside of work.”

The interview recalled an earlier unfinished line from Mary Jo: “You know, you’re not alone. I have my own…” Abercrumbie’s preview made viewers curious about what that personal history might mean, but the interview itself does not give a full account of the episode’s outcome.
