ABC, ESPN and Disney’s other major networks returned to YouTube TV on November 14, 2025, after a blackout lasting more than two weeks. The new multiyear distribution agreement ended the immediate crisis, but it did not settle the larger fight over sports pricing, channel bundles and how much choice streaming-TV customers should have.
A proposed $50 million antitrust settlement, possible package changes and ESPN’s direct-to-consumer strategy mean the dispute has moved from a blackout to the structure of live television itself.
What happened in the 2025 blackout?
Disney programming disappeared from YouTube TV on October 30, 2025, when the previous distribution agreement expired without a renewal. The outage affected ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN Deportes, SEC Network, ACC Network, Disney Channel, FX, Freeform, National Geographic, NatGeo Wild and other Disney-owned services.
That made the dispute especially disruptive during live sports and college-football season, while also removing local ABC programming and popular entertainment channels. Disney and YouTube TV announced a new multiyear agreement on November 14, and the networks began returning. The agreement’s exact duration and financial terms were not disclosed. AP News reported the restoration and the companies’ statements; TVTechnology reported that the deal was multiyear with undisclosed economics.

What each company said the fight was about
YouTube TV’s argument
YouTube TV said Disney’s proposed terms would raise costs and reduce consumer choice. It presented the negotiation as an effort to protect the service’s value rather than force subscribers into more expensive programming.
Disney’s argument
Disney said YouTube TV was refusing to pay fair rates and accused Google of using its market position in ways that disadvantaged competition. Disney also criticized YouTube TV for removing channels before the existing agreement’s scheduled expiration. These are competing company claims, not findings by a court. The AP account quotes both positions.
What the public still does not know
- The wholesale rates and whether YouTube TV accepted a higher effective fee.
- Whether Disney made meaningful concessions on packaging.
- Whether “future flexibility” means customer-selectable plans or only additional negotiating and marketing options.
- The technical and commercial scope of access to ESPN’s direct-to-consumer product for YouTube TV customers.
Why ESPN keeps the dispute alive
ESPN is among the most valuable and expensive properties in pay television. Its presence in a broad base package means households that rarely watch sports help fund it, while sports viewers often consider ESPN indispensable.

- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
That creates a structural conflict. Disney benefits from broad distribution and dependable affiliate fees. YouTube TV wants a competitive headline price and the ability to design more flexible offers. Subscribers increasingly want to pay separately for sports, entertainment or news instead of buying every channel in one bundle.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAP reported an ESPN standalone service starting at $29.99 per month at the time of its coverage. That direct-to-consumer product is related to, but not automatically interchangeable with, the linear ESPN channels carried through YouTube TV: local ABC, other ESPN feeds, authentication, DVR behavior and event rights can differ. See the AP report for the dated price signal.
“Future flexibility” is not yet a new YouTube TV package
The agreement reportedly preserves greater flexibility for future offers and provides for access to ESPN’s direct product. Neither point establishes that an ESPN-free YouTube TV plan, a sports-only tier or a cheaper Disney-reduced package is currently available.

Settlement-related reporting says Disney agreed to consider proposals from internet-delivered live-TV providers for packages excluding some Disney networks, potentially including ESPN. That is a negotiated obligation to consider proposals, not a guaranteed launch or a published price. The reported non-monetary relief is described here.
Any future offer would raise practical questions: Would a narrower plan really cost less after losing bundle scale? Could subscribers retain ABC and entertainment channels while buying ESPN separately? Would discounts or promotional terms disappear? Until YouTube TV posts a customer-facing plan, price and eligibility rules, these remain open questions.

The proposed settlement in Biddle et al. v. The Walt Disney Company, No. 5:22-cv-07317-EJD, keeps the economics of Disney’s bundling practices under scrutiny. It covers eligible YouTube TV and DirecTV Stream subscribers and creates a $50 million fund. Disney denies wrongdoing and admits no liability. The settlement agreement records those terms and the denial.

If you stayed with YouTube TV
- Review your bill and plan notices rather than assuming the restored channels guarantee a stable future price.
- Check your account for any new ESPN or package options; treat announced flexibility as hypothetical until a plan is actually displayed.
- Save subscription dates and payment records if you may qualify for the settlement.
If you switched during the blackout
Compare the complete replacement, not just one missing channel. Verify local ABC by ZIP code, ESPN and ESPN2, SEC and ACC Network coverage, regional sports, DVR storage and retention, simultaneous streams, standard (not promotional) pricing, and whether Disney+, Hulu or ESPN are included or merely offered as add-ons.
Do not cancel because of a rumor
No public evidence establishes that another blackout is imminent. A future renewal dispute remains possible because the deal’s term and economics are private, but the 2025 channels are restored now.

How the main alternatives differ
Prices and lineups change frequently. Verify every figure on the provider’s official page before switching.
| Service | ABC availability | ESPN and specialty sports | Disney options | Price information | Key caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube TV | Market-dependent local affiliate | Verify current plan | Separate or integrated options may change | AP cited $82.99/month for the base plan at the time of its report | Future package flexibility is unconfirmed |
| Hulu + Live TV | Market-dependent | Verify current plan | Strong Disney integration | Disney page displayed $89.99/month for a bundle when observed; recheck | May cost more for non-Disney users |
| DIRECTV Stream | Market-dependent | Verify current plan | Different package strategy | Not stated; check official pricing | Settlement eligibility and lineups differ from YouTube TV |
| Fubo | Market-dependent | Sports-oriented lineup; verify current channels | Availability can change | Not stated; check official pricing | FuboTV plaintiffs were not part of this settled class notice |
Official comparison points include YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, and Disney’s Disney, Hulu and ESPN bundle page. Bundle prices, advertising tiers and included ESPN products are volatile.
The business question behind the blackout
The dispute illustrates why live television remains difficult to unbundle. Disney wants the reach and recurring fees of a large package while developing direct sales for ESPN. YouTube TV needs enough high-value channels to attract subscribers without making its headline price uncompetitive. Customers want narrower choices, but smaller packages can lose the scale that helps fund expensive sports rights.
The November agreement solved access, not that economic tension. The next visible consequence could be a price change, a redesigned tier, ESPN integration, implementation of settlement commitments or another renewal negotiation. None is guaranteed, but each follows directly from the unresolved structure of the business.
