A difficult exchange in Alabama
Another conversation pairs a young Black student with a retired white professor. The student says they do not start from equal positions; the professor urges her to let go of negativity. Berkeley’s account describes a change in how they listen to one another. They end by thanking each other and finding narrow common ground, while the disagreement remains difficult.
That ending matters: the film does not present a sudden conversion or a neat settlement of the conflict. The moment is recognition and connection, not proof that the underlying issue has been resolved.

Does the film argue that people should agree?
No. Reich frames the goal as agreeing on a process for handling disagreement, not compelling people to share conclusions. Berkeley quotes him saying, “We shouldn’t try to agree — that’s not what we do. … But we should agree to a process for sorting out our disagreements.”
He also describes genuine listening as exhausting and difficult. In the film, the effort to listen is not a frictionless technique: it requires time and energy, even when participants accept it as part of their civic responsibility. These are statements relayed by Berkeley’s news feature, not verified transcript excerpts.

What does the film establish—and what does it not?
The scenes offer examples of people hearing one another and, in one case, finding limited common ground. They support reading the film as an exploration of listening as a demanding, potentially useful way to recognize another person’s experience.
They do not establish that dialogue generally reduces polarization, changes participants’ views over time, or resolves structural and political conflict. Berkeley’s account describes selected scenes and the filmmakers’ framing; it reports no long-term evaluation or measured outcome. The film is best understood as an invitation to consider how disagreement might be handled, not evidence that conversation alone bridges every divide.
