David Kittredge did not pitch John Boorman a documentary designed to ridicule Exorcist II: The Heretic. He wrote that he found the film fascinating and wanted to discuss it seriously, including its unusual production choices. Boorman agreed to an interview at his home in Ireland in 2018. That full-day conversation turned a film about the making of a troubled sequel into a broader portrait of Boorman and the risks of artistic ambition.
How did Kittredge persuade Boorman to take part?
Kittredge approached Boorman with a concern that shaped the invitation: he did not want the director to think the documentary would make a joke of him or his film. In an email, he said he found The Heretic fascinating and wanted to understand it. He was particularly interested in choices such as staging African exteriors on soundstages, rather than treating them as an easy punchline. After an email exchange, Boorman agreed to speak with him.
This was a pitch to a documentary subject, not a formal studio or financing pitch. Kittredge’s account points to a straightforward strategy: demonstrate respect for the work, show genuine curiosity about its choices, and make clear what the conversation is for. Kittredge’s Eye For Film interview and his Moveable Fest interview describe the approach and the first meeting.
Why did the documentary grow beyond Exorcist II?
Kittredge began with a documentary about the troubled making of Exorcist II: The Heretic. The first interview with Boorman took place at the director’s home in Ireland in 2018 and lasted the entire day. Boorman spoke not only about the sequel, but also about his family, other films, ambition and life as an artist. Kittredge said the breadth of that conversation made him feel responsible for telling a larger story.

The sequel remained the film’s entry point and a case study: a conspicuously ambitious work whose vision did not connect with its first audience. But the documentary became less a postscript about one film’s reputation than an inquiry into what it takes to pursue an artistic vision—and what happens when that vision meets resistance. Kittredge described its subject to Eye For Film as “what it means to be an artist, how to live as an artist and the courage you need as an artist.”
What does the film say about Boorman’s ambition?
Boorman’s account is the documentary’s emotional center. Around it, interviews and production history place The Heretic in the context of a period when studios could give directors room for unusually large creative swings. Kittredge treats the film’s failure to find an audience as part of the story, rather than proof that its ambitions were trivial or its maker was a fool.

That framing helps explain why Kittredge wanted Boorman to participate. A film about a notorious sequel could simply revisit its reputation; a conversation about how and why it was made could reveal something about the director’s creative temperament and the risks involved in making art at scale.
How long did Boorman and the Devil take to make?
Kittredge says the documentary took eight years to make. The pandemic prevented interviews for a year and a half. He also worked as lead editor on the limited series Queer for Fear while continuing the film. These are Kittredge’s own timeline details, given in his 2026 Eye For Film interview.

Why was the first cut so long?
Kittredge says the first assembly, ready in September 2023, ran 196 minutes. Viewers found it compelling but exhausting. He then spent two years shaping the cut, aiming to retain the information and emotional ending without overwhelming the audience. The 196-minute figure refers to that early assembly, not the released documentary.
How was the documentary financed?
Kittredge describes the project as a low-budget labor of love supported by close friends and family money. He has not supplied a budget figure, so there is no verified amount to attach to the film’s production. His account of the financing appears in TheWrap’s interview with Kittredge.

What production history informed the documentary?
Kittredge says Barbara Pallenberg’s book The Making of Exorcist 2: The Heretic was an especially insightful source for understanding how the sequel was made. He also distinguishes between the European recut of The Heretic, which he encountered first, and the original version he saw later. His account does not provide a formal catalog or runtime comparison of those cuts; they should not be treated as interchangeable when discussing his first impressions. See his Eye For Film interview for his comments on the book and the versions he saw.
Where can you find Boorman and the Devil?
Yellow Veil Pictures lists the documentary in its distribution catalog. Apple TV has a Canada-specific listing identifying it as a 2026 title with a 112-minute runtime. These listings establish regional catalog information, not universal availability: where and how the film can be watched may vary by location and date.
