The Woman in the Yard is a 2025 PG-13 supernatural horror-thriller built around a strong premise and a committed Danielle Deadwyler performance. Its grief-centered metaphor gives the story more to chew on than a straightforward scare ride, but critics and audience summaries alike suggest that the metaphor can crowd out the suspense. It is best suited to viewers open to psychological horror and an unresolved interpretive layer, rather than anyone looking primarily for sustained shocks.
What is The Woman in the Yard about?
Ramona is grieving her husband’s death when a mysterious woman appears outside the family’s farmhouse. The figure keeps moving closer, and Ramona must protect her children from the threat. The official synopsis sets up a contained supernatural siege; the story also invites a reading through grief and mental health, though its definitive meaning is not established by the available official synopsis or review summaries.
Jaume Collet-Serra directs from a screenplay by Sam Stefanak. Danielle Deadwyler stars as Ramona, with Okwui Okpokwasili, Peyton Jackson, Estella Kahiha and Russell Hornsby in the cast. The film runs 1 hour 28 minutes on Universal’s listing. Universal Pictures’ film page categorizes it as horror and thriller. [c1]
Is The Woman in the Yard scary?
It has the ingredients for creeping dread: an isolated home, a threatening presence that approaches gradually, and a mother trying to keep her children safe. But the available critical response points to a gap between that promising setup and the delivery of conventional horror scares. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus praises the premise and Deadwyler’s performance while arguing that the heavy-handed metaphor leaves little room for scares or surprise. Its audience summary likewise commends the striking imagery and mental-health subject matter but says the film falls short as horror. These are platform summaries, not a guarantee of how any individual viewer will react.

Individual responses vary. Wendy Ide, writing for the Observer on April 1, 2025, praised the initial premise but said the third act dissipates its creeping chill. Dwight Brown, writing on April 15, 2025, described a film that can creep viewers out but is less adept at delivering freak-me-out horror. Taken together, these reactions make the film a better fit for viewers who value atmosphere, performance and interpretation than for those seeking a steady run of startling scares. Rotten Tomatoes’ film page collects the consensus and listed reviews. [c3]
What works—and what may not
Danielle Deadwyler anchors the film
Deadwyler’s performance is a clear point of strength in the critics consensus. The central situation depends on Ramona’s response to a threat that is both outside the home and bound up with her bereavement; the film’s emotional and supernatural strands therefore rest heavily on the lead performance.

The metaphor is also the main point of division
The story’s grief and mental-health layer gives the premise interpretive weight, but the critical and audience summaries suggest that it can become too explicit at the expense of suspense and surprise. If you enjoy horror that leaves room to examine what a threat represents, that emphasis may appeal. If you want the mystery and scares to take priority, the same choice may frustrate.
Content guidance: is it suitable for younger teens?
The U.S. rating is PG-13 for terror, some violent content and bloody images, suicide-related content, and brief strong language. That rating does not mean the film is suitable for every younger teen; the suicide-related material and the way it is presented are important considerations for families. Universal’s film page gives the rating reasons. [c1]

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verdict: who should watch it?
Choose The Woman in the Yard if a grief-shaped supernatural story, striking imagery and a strong central performance matter more to you than a reliably scary, tightly explained horror plot. Approach it cautiously if you want conventional scares or a clear resolution to the film’s central mystery: the available review summaries identify the tension between metaphor and horror delivery as a central weakness, and they do not establish a definitive explanation of the ending or the woman’s identity.
