The Witness: Netflix’s Three-Part Crime Drama Has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes Score—and a Much Darker Story

Netflix’s three-part drama The Witness has a 100% Tomatometer score from 12 critics and reached No. 1 on Netflix’s English TV chart. But its darkest subject is the child forced to live with the aftermath of Rachel Nickell’s murder—and an investigation that pursued the wrong man.

Netflix’s The Witness is critically spotless but emotionally punishing. The three-part British drama had a 100% Tomatometer score from 12 critics when checked, while Netflix reported that it reached No. 1 on the English TV list with 10.1 million views in the relevant week. Those are two different achievements: Rotten Tomatoes confirms the critic score, not a formal overall “No. 1” ranking.

Created, written and executive produced by Rob Williams and directed by Alex Winckler, the TV-MA drama revisits the 1992 murder of Rachel Nickell on Wimbledon Common. Its central witness was not a detective or an adult passer-by, but Nickell’s two-year-old son, Alex Hanscombe. The series is therefore less a conventional whodunit than a story about childhood trauma, a family forced into the public eye and an investigation that inflicted further damage.

What is The Witness about?

The Witness dramatizes the aftermath of Rachel Nickell’s murder in broad daylight on Wimbledon Common in London in 1992. Nickell’s young son, Alex, was the only eyewitness to the attack. His father and Nickell’s partner, André Hanscombe, became a single parent while trying to protect Alex from the consequences of what he had seen.

That meant dealing with grief, media attention and an investigation that grew increasingly troubled. Netflix identifies Alex and André as consultants on the drama and says the series is based on Alex’s memoir, Letting Go. The family’s involvement gives the production a direct connection to the experience it is depicting, although a scripted drama should not be treated as a scene-by-scene historical record.

The central question is not simply “Who killed Rachel Nickell?” It is also what happens when a very young child is made the key to a high-pressure criminal investigation—and when the institutions surrounding the family fail to protect them from the consequences.

Why the story is darker than a standard crime thriller

1. The witness is a traumatized toddler

Alex was nearly three years old when his mother was killed. He was not in a position to give investigators the kind of clear, adult eyewitness account that crime dramas often rely on. His age, trauma and limited ability to communicate made the investigation especially difficult, while also placing an extraordinary burden on the family.

The drama’s emotional weight comes from that contradiction: investigators needed information from a child who had first been exposed to an unbearable event and then surrounded by adults trying to interpret what he could remember.

2. The family’s grief became public property

The murder generated intense media attention. André had to parent Alex while dealing with public scrutiny and the pressure created by a case that attracted national interest. Netflix’s description emphasizes the family’s effort to keep Alex safe from that attention, not just their search for a legal resolution.

That makes the series bleak in a way that differs from a conventional serial-killer drama. The danger is not confined to the original crime scene. The family must also navigate press coverage, public speculation and the consequences of being attached to a case that refuses to disappear.

3. The investigation becomes part of the tragedy

The inquiry did not move cleanly toward the truth. It led to the prosecution of the wrong man, turning institutional failure into one of the story’s main dramatic engines. The series asks viewers to consider how investigative pressure, flawed assumptions and the desire for a breakthrough can create another form of harm.

This is why describing The Witness as merely a murder mystery undersells it. The murder begins the story, but the damage continues through the investigation and its effect on the people left behind.

What does the 100% Rotten Tomatoes score actually mean?

Rotten Tomatoes listed Season 1 at 100% from 12 critic reviews when the score was checked. That means all 12 counted reviews were classified as fresh. It does not mean every critic awarded the show a perfect numerical score, and it does not establish that The Witness is the No. 1 show on Rotten Tomatoes overall.

The audience figure was much less settled: the Popcornmeter stood at 48% from fewer than 50 ratings at the same check. That number may change as more viewers submit ratings, but it is a useful reminder that a perfect early critic percentage and broad audience consensus are not the same thing.

Did The Witness hit No. 1?

Yes—but the verified No. 1 position belongs to Netflix’s own viewing chart. In its June 16, 2026 Top 10 report, Netflix said the series reached No. 1 on the English TV list with 10.1 million views during the covered week.

So the accurate version of the headline is: The Witness reached No. 1 on Netflix’s English-language viewing chart and had a 100% Rotten Tomatoes critic score from 12 reviews at the time checked. It would be misleading to collapse those facts into a claim that the series was “No. 1 on Rotten Tomatoes.”

Is The Witness based on a true story?

Yes. It is based on the real murder of Rachel Nickell and the experiences of her son, Alex Hanscombe, and his father, André. Netflix says the drama draws on Alex’s memoir, Letting Go, and that Alex and André acted as consultants.

For viewers who want the family’s account in a different form, Alex Hanscombe’s memoir Letting Go is the most direct next step. The 2017 HarperCollins edition is listed at 272 pages and covers the murder’s aftermath, the media storm, legal proceedings and Alex’s later attempt to make sense of what happened. The memoir and the series should not be assumed to contain identical details: one is a first-person account and the other is a dramatized adaptation.

The Witness and the Rachel Nickell investigation: spoiler-light context

The following section discusses the real case in more detail.

Colin Stagg became the focus of a controversial undercover operation intended to elicit a confession. The prosecution connected to that operation failed, and Stagg was not convicted of Nickell’s murder. It is more accurate to describe him as wrongly accused or wrongly prosecuted in connection with the case than to suggest that he was convicted and later exonerated.

Years later, Robert Napper was identified as the killer and convicted after new evidence, including developments in DNA analysis, connected him to the crime. The case therefore contains two sharply different investigative phases: an early pursuit that focused on the wrong man and a later breakthrough that identified the actual perpetrator.

The Netflix drama focuses primarily on Alex and André rather than making the killer the centre of the story. Contemporary critical discussion has also noted the production’s limited emphasis on graphic depictions and its interest in the family’s experience. That does not make the series easy viewing: the subject matter includes the killing of a young mother, a child witness and years of institutional and media pressure.

The companion documentary: The Murder of Rachel Nickell

Netflix released the companion documentary The Murder of Rachel Nickell on June 4, 2026, the same date as the scripted series. Directed by BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Lucy Bowden, it uses archive footage, family accounts and commentary from forensic experts to examine the murder and the investigation.

The two titles serve different purposes. The Witness uses dramatic reconstruction and performances to explore the family’s emotional experience. The Murder of Rachel Nickell is the better choice for viewers who want archival material, expert context and a more explicitly documentary treatment of the case. Watching both may provide a fuller picture, but the documentary should not be treated as a simple “behind the scenes” featurette for the drama.

Cast and format

The Witness is a three-episode British English-language drama created and written by Rob Williams. The principal cast listed for the series includes:

  • Jordan Bolger as André Hanscombe
  • Max Fincham as teenage Alex Hanscombe
  • Jahsaiah Williams as younger Alex Hanscombe
  • Neil Maskell as DI Keith Pedder
  • Kevin Eldon as DCI Mick Wickerson
  • Mark Stanley as DS Ivan Agnew

The series is rated TV-MA and is available on Netflix. Because the story concerns a real murder involving a child, viewers who are sensitive to child trauma, murder investigations or institutional failures may want to approach it with caution.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you want a compact, serious true-crime drama that is more interested in consequences than sensational reveals. At three episodes, it is designed as a concentrated account rather than an expansive procedural. Its strongest material lies in the relationship between Alex and André and in the question of how an investigation can compound a family’s suffering.

It may not be the right choice if you are looking for an escapist mystery, a killer-led thriller or a case presented without emotional difficulty. The “dark” element is not just graphic violence. It is the knowledge that a child is pulled into the aftermath of his mother’s murder and that the search for justice initially takes the wrong direction.

What the headline should—and should not—claim

Claim Accurate? Why
“The Witness has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score.” Yes, with a time and review-count qualifier. Rotten Tomatoes listed 100% from 12 critics when checked.
“It hit No. 1 on Rotten Tomatoes.” Not established. The available evidence confirms a critic percentage, not a formal overall Rotten Tomatoes ranking.
“It hit No. 1 on Netflix.” Yes, with the chart specified. Netflix reported No. 1 on its English TV list and 10.1 million views in the cited week.
“It is universally acclaimed.” No. The early audience Popcornmeter was 48% from fewer than 50 ratings.

The Bottom Line

The Witness earned a 100% Tomatometer score from 12 critics and reached No. 1 on Netflix’s English TV chart, but its real distinction is the story it chooses to tell. This is not simply a puzzle about a murderer. It is a grim account of a child witness, a father trying to protect him and an investigation that first pursued the wrong man. For the family’s perspective, follow the series with Alex Hanscombe’s memoir, Letting Go; for archival and forensic context, watch Netflix’s companion documentary, The Murder of Rachel Nickell.
