The character revealed as the force behind the conclave sabotage in The Witcher Season 3 is Vilgefortz of Roggeveen, played by Mahesh Jadu. The turn arrives in Episode 5, “The Art of Illusion,” when Geralt and Yennefer’s suspicion of Stregobor gives way to the realization that a trusted, politically influential mage is working against them. Netflix’s later Season 4 explainer says the betrayal continues to shape the story—but “most despicably evil” and “the show will never be the same” are headline judgments, not objective rankings or guarantees.
Who is the real villain revealed in The Witcher Season 3?
It is Vilgefortz of Roggeveen, portrayed by Mahesh Jadu. Netflix’s episode explainer describes him as the “actual big bad” exposed by the final shift in perspective in “The Art of Illusion.” Geralt and Yennefer initially suspect Stregobor while investigating attacks and threats surrounding the conclave; as they piece together the night’s events, they discover Vilgefortz is the one trying to sabotage it. Netflix Tudum’s Episode 5 explainer lays out that reveal.
How does “The Art of Illusion” reveal Vilgefortz?
The episode revisits the same evening through multiple perspectives rather than presenting the truth all at once. Its accounts of the ball first encourage suspicion of Stregobor, then add what Geralt and Yennefer understand through their own plan, before a final perspective exposes what actually happened. Netflix quotes showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich describing that structure as preserving the book’s basic scene pattern while flashing back to Geralt and Yennefer’s night together.
That construction makes the twist more than a last-minute name reveal: viewers have to revise their reading of a night they have already seen. The threats and apparent clues point toward one suspect, while the final account changes the meaning of the intrigue around the conclave.

Why is Vilgefortz’s betrayal consequential?
Vilgefortz is not introduced as an obvious outsider. Netflix’s Season 3 cast guide presents him as a charismatic mage with a military past and as Tissaia’s partner in love and politics. The two are trying to steer the Brotherhood in a new direction, giving him influence within the very institution whose conclave he seeks to undermine. Netflix’s Season 3 cast guide identifies Jadu as Vilgefortz of Roggeveen and describes that public role.
The betrayal therefore puts personal trust and political power in conflict. The reveal also reframes the danger around the mages: the threat is not simply a hidden enemy outside their circle, but someone with standing and access inside it.

What does Vilgefortz do after the reveal?
Netflix’s explainer for Season 4, published October 30, 2025, says the extent of Vilgefortz’s treachery and ambition continues to unfold after Season 3. It describes his conflict over Ciri and quotes Hissrich: “He wants to be the one controlling the magic.” Read in that context, the Season 3 twist is the opening of a continuing struggle over power, not a self-contained mystery whose consequences end with the conclave. Netflix Tudum’s Vilgefortz explainer provides that later-season context.

Netflix says Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Time of Contempt was a major source of inspiration for Season 3, and Hissrich said the show aimed to retain the structure of the book’s scenes in Episode 5. That supports a connection between the novel and the episode’s layered reveal, but it does not establish that every event or beat is identical. Netflix’s account is not a scene-by-scene comparison of the adaptation and the book.
