There is no confirmed release date for The Winds of Winter. George R. R. Martin has acknowledged the controversy over the novel’s delay and said he is still working on it, but neither those comments nor a 2026 viral leak establish a publication schedule.
What Martin said about the delay
At a New York Comic Con appearance in October 2025, Martin addressed the controversy around the book’s lateness, saying he has “always had trouble with deadlines” and does not feel happy about breaching contracts or missing deadlines. GamesRadar+ reported that he also said he still loves the book, remains interested in it and is working on it. These remarks acknowledge the delay; they are not a release commitment. GamesRadar+’s report is coverage of the appearance, not a full event transcript.
Why the 2025 announcement was not a completion notice
In an April 8, 2025 post on his official blog, Martin pre-empted rumors tied to an upcoming announcement: “No, I am not announcing the completion of THE WINDS OF WINTER, the sixth volume of A SONG OF ICE & FIRE. Please don’t start any rumors to that effect.” He also complained that offhand comments unrelated to the novel were repeatedly taken as signs it was imminent, adding: “It’s not. No.” Martin’s post, “D-Day Comes Early”, is a direct statement from the author that the announcement did not mean the manuscript was complete.
What the 2026 leak claim got wrong
In April 2026, an online claim said the manuscript was finished and would be announced at San Diego Comic-Con for a fall release. Bantam Books rejected the supposed leak in a statement to Entertainment Weekly: “The online chatter you are seeing regarding a supposed leak is false.” ComicBook.com reported the publisher’s response, and The Independent also reported the denial. The claim should be treated as false, not as evidence of a hidden or postponed schedule. ComicBook.com’s report and The Independent’s report cover the response.

Does Martin’s “pretty soon” comment give a date?
No. In a January 2026 interview excerpt quoted by ComicBook.com, Martin said he thought that if he could get some other work off his back, he “could finish The Winds of Winter pretty soon.” The surrounding context, as reported, was that he had competing writing commitments and was far behind. “Could finish” expresses a hope, not a calendar date, publisher schedule or promise of publication.
