James shared a photo from his first meeting with Kirkconnell on The Bachelor and said the relationship had ended. His caption began, “Father God, give Rachael and I strength to mend our broken hearts,” and asked for “peace about this decision to end our relationship,” as quoted in the Los Angeles Times’ January 16, 2025 report. The post confirmed the breakup but did not give a reason for it.
The timing caught some followers off guard: the couple had recently posted about a trip to London, according to the same report. Those public posts provide context for the surprise, but they do not establish what either person expected privately.
What Rachael Kirkconnell said about the breakup
On Call Her Daddy on January 29, Kirkconnell said that she and James had privately ended the relationship in Tokyo after arguments and a serious discussion about compatibility and marriage. ABC News’ January 29, 2025 account reported her description of that conversation. Kirkconnell said James did not feel ready to propose and did not see himself marrying her.

She summarized part of the issue by saying, “At the end of the day, there are things that we aren’t compatible with.” Bachelor Nation reproduced the interview excerpt. These are Kirkconnell’s recollections of their private discussion, not a jointly confirmed explanation from both people. The Los Angeles Times also reported that she denied infidelity reports during the interview; the available reporting does not support speculation about blame.
Why the Instagram post surprised Kirkconnell
Kirkconnell said the couple had called it quits privately only a few hours before James’s post appeared. She said she learned about the announcement shortly before her flight out of Tokyo, then lost internet access during the flight. In her account, the timing and public announcement left her blindsided. That describes her experience of the post; James’s caption itself did not explain the timing.
How their relationship began
James was the lead on season 25 of The Bachelor in 2021 and gave Kirkconnell his final rose. They chose to continue dating rather than become engaged at the finale. They separated after filming amid controversy over resurfaced images of Kirkconnell at a 2018 antebellum-themed event, then later reunited. The latest status established by the cited reporting is that they had split: James announced the breakup on January 16, 2025, and Kirkconnell discussed it later that month. Kirkconnell said she did not think reconciliation was possible at the time. That was her view in January 2025, not confirmation of their status in October 2026; the available reporting does not establish whether anything changed afterward.
