The Wildest Moments From ECW One Night Stand 2005 and 2006

The wildest moments from ECW One Night Stand were not all the same kind of spectacle. The 2005 show leaned on ECW’s returning roster and hard-hitting matchups; the 2006 event delivered an unresolved extreme-rules bout, a chaotic six-person match, and a WWE Championship change that made the Hammerstein crowd part of the story.

“Wildest” is an editorial judgment, not an official ranking. The moments below stand out for crowd intensity, physical spectacle, surprise, or consequence, based on WWE’s event results and contemporary coverage.

Why the 2005 and 2006 shows stand out

WWE’s results archive lists both ECW One Night Stand shows at New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom: June 12, 2005, and June 11, 2006. The shared venue gave the events a common setting, but their defining spectacles differed: the 2005 card brought together ECW names and familiar rivalries, while 2006 ended with Rob Van Dam winning the WWE Championship.

For the 2005 event, WWE’s official results include Lance Storm over Chris Jericho, Super Crazy over Yoshihiro Tajiri and Little Guido in a Three-Way Dance, Rey Mysterio over Psychosis, Sabu over Rhyno, Chris Benoit over Eddie Guerrero, Mike Awesome over Masato Tanaka, and the Dudley Boyz over Tommy Dreamer and Sandman. WWE’s results archive confirms the card and outcomes.

#1 Best Overall
ECW: One Night Stand (2005)
  • Nothing spells insane, intense, and extreme like ECW. Now, the brutal, death defying, and bloody style of pro-wrestling that came to be known as "hardcore" returns, live in New York City. System Requirements: Length: 180 mins Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: SPORTS/GAMES Rating: NR Age: 651191938940 UPC: 651191938940 Manufacturer No: WWE93894

2005: a card built around ECW’s returning names

Mike Awesome versus Masato Tanaka

Awesome and Tanaka make the strongest match-focused pick from the 2005 card: WWE preserves their bout as a named video in its official archive. Its appeal is the physicality of the matchup, rather than a result with championship consequences. WWE’s match video page identifies the bout.

The Dudley Boyz against Dreamer and Sandman

The other natural 2005 selection pairs the Dudley Boyz with Tommy Dreamer and Sandman. The official result establishes the participants and the Dudley Boyz’ victory, making it a meeting of recognizable ECW teams and personalities. WWE’s event results do not, by themselves, support a more detailed account of the finish.

Rank #2
ECW: One Night Stand (2006)
  • Rob Van Dam returns to ECW to cash in his "Money in the Bank" title shot, but will he cash in on the WWE Championship? See what happens when the action gets extreme, at ECW's One Night Stand. Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: SPORTS/GAMES Rating: NR Age: 651191945436 UPC: 651191945436 Manufacturer No: 94543

2006: the matches that left questions and raised the stakes

Rey Mysterio versus Sabu ends without a winner

WWE records Mysterio versus Sabu as an Extreme Rules Match that ended in a no-contest. That unresolved result is unusual enough to make the bout one of the event’s most memorable entries: the official record does not name a winner. It does not establish an injury explanation or medical decision, so those should not be read into the result. WWE’s 2006 results page lists the match and outcome.

A six-person hardcore match crosses generations

Terry Funk, Tommy Dreamer, and Beulah McGillicutty faced Mick Foley, Edge, and Lita in a six-person hardcore match. Its lineup brought together ECW figures and WWE stars in a single bout; WWE’s results page records the match, and its archive retains a dedicated match video. The official results and WWE’s match video page document it.

Edge’s interference helps RVD win the WWE Championship

The main event supplied the night’s clearest combination of surprise and consequence. Disguised in a motorcycle helmet, Edge speared John Cena through a table. Rob Van Dam then hit the Five Star Frog Splash. With the referee knocked out, Paul Heyman made the three-count, and WWE reports that RVD defeated Cena to become WWE Champion. WWE’s match report recounts the finish; its contemporary coverage of the title win also records the result.

The finish stands out because the interference, the Frog Splash, and Heyman’s count all contribute to a title change rather than merely a dramatic near-fall. The sequence also gave the ECW-branded event a WWE Championship result to celebrate.

The Hammerstein crowd becomes part of the ending

WWE’s June 12, 2006 report said 3,000 fans were in the Hammerstein Ballroom. That is WWE’s reported attendance, not an independently audited count. The coverage also quoted Van Dam: “I felt like we did it, meaning both myself and the fans.” WWE described him celebrating with the crowd and ECW locker room, turning the title win into a shared closing moment. WWE’s report contains the attendance figure and quote.

Where the 2007 sequel fits

WWE’s archive lists another event on June 3, 2007, but names it “One Night Stand,” without the ECW prefix. Its card included RVD versus Randy Orton in a Stretcher Match and CM Punk teaming with Tommy Dreamer and Sandman in a six-man Tables Match. It extends the series, but the most clearly documented ECW-branded moments in this shortlist come from 2005 and 2006. WWE’s 2007 results archive lists the event and matches.
