The brutal callback is Belinda leaving spa manager Pornchai after receiving money connected to Greg and Tanya’s legacy—echoing how Tanya raised Belinda’s hopes of opening a spa business, then left without backing it. Creator Mike White said he conceived the finale as Belinda “leaving somebody in the same way she got left.”
What is the Season 1 callback in The White Lotus Season 3 finale?
In Season 1, Belinda (Natasha Rothwell), the White Lotus spa manager, discusses her dream of opening a business with guest Tanya McQuoid (Jennifer Coolidge). Tanya encourages the possibility of backing Belinda, but ultimately withdraws and leaves the resort. Belinda stays behind to work, with the promise of support gone.
In Season 3, Belinda is back at a White Lotus in Thailand. After receiving a financial windfall from Tanya’s former husband, Greg, she chooses not to build a business with Pornchai, the spa manager with whom she had discussed that possibility. The parallel is not an exact replay of every Season 1 detail: it is a reversal of who has the power to leave, and who is left with an unrealized possibility.
Why did Belinda leave Pornchai?
The finale establishes that Belinda chooses not to pursue the business with Pornchai after receiving the money. It does not show her immediately opening a spa or giving the money away. White said he wanted her to enjoy the windfall first, while leaving open the possibility that she might later do something meaningful with it.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That choice gives Belinda agency, but it also creates the sting of the callback: Pornchai is left where Belinda once was, after a plan seemed within reach. White described the echo as intentional. In remarks on The White Lotus Official Podcast, quoted by The Independent on April 7, 2025, he said: “The ending was kinda the first thing I really thought of — Belinda leaving with money and leaving somebody in the same way she got left.” The WBD pressroom also published an excerpted Q&A from the podcast.
Did Mike White explain Belinda’s ending?
White called the mirrored departure an early, “anchoring” idea for the season. He linked it to the debate around Belinda’s Season 1 story: some viewers saw the ending as an accurate portrayal of a worker’s limited prospects, while others thought it was too bleak. White put that criticism in context, saying: “Just because there was some criticism: she was the Black character; she was the dutiful put-upon worker; and then she got this very sad ending where she’s consigned to work there forever, while everybody’s riding off into the sunset.”

He also questioned whether ideals are as easy to maintain without financial pressure: “But it’s easy to be virtuous and have certain kinds of ideals when you have no money and don’t have to really put your money where your mouth is.” These are White’s comments about the idea behind the ending, not a definitive instruction about how viewers should judge Belinda.

Belinda finally puts herself first
One reading is that Belinda has earned the right to protect her own financial security rather than turn a windfall into another person’s rescue plan. White’s point that she should get to enjoy the money first supports that interpretation. Her decision need not mean she has abandoned every future ambition; the finale leaves what she does later unresolved.

The injury is passed on
Another reading is that Belinda’s departure reproduces the imbalance that hurt her: she can leave, while Pornchai is left facing the disappointment of a plan that will not happen as expected. White’s description of her leaving someone “in the same way she got left” makes that parallel explicit.
Those readings can coexist. Belinda’s choice is an act of self-determination, and the way it echoes Tanya’s choice makes it uncomfortable. The callback’s force comes from leaving that tension intact rather than turning the windfall into a simple redemption story.
