Spoilers for all three seasons, including the season 3 finale. The Wheel of Time was cancelled by Prime Video after three seasons on May 23, 2025. There is no season 4 at Prime Video. Showrunner Rafe Judkins has said he hopes the series could continue elsewhere, but no revival has been confirmed. The finale’s major deaths are Loial, Siuan and Sammael.
Who dies in The Wheel of Time season 3 finale?
Loial
Loial dies in episode 7 during the Battle of Emond’s Field, sacrificing himself in the fight. The death departs from Robert Jordan’s novels, where Loial survives and has further storylines. In an April 17, 2025 interview with TheWrap, Judkins said the writers had to make choices about which characters could carry substantial stories in a television adaptation with limited seasons and episodes.
Siuan
After Elaida deposes her as the Flame of Tar Valon, Siuan is killed by Elaida in the White Tower. Siuan also survives in the books, so her death is one of the finale’s clearest departures from the novels.
Sammael
After attacking Rand and the Aiel at Cold Rocks Hold, Sammael is captured. Moghedien kills him by pulling him inside out. Judkins said the choice makes the Forsaken’s rivalry visible as action rather than leaving it as a threat: “Having Moghedian kill Sammael … we thought it was an important difference to make for the show.”

The girl Rand cannot save
Earlier, Rand accidentally kills a young girl while using the One Power against Sammael. His attempt to revive her fails. Judkins described the scene as part of Rand’s emotional turn as he accepts power and destiny; it is distinct from the deaths of Loial and Siuan, which he identified as major changes to book-surviving characters.
Why did the show change the books?
Judkins said a television adaptation cannot carry the same large ensemble as a 15-book saga across a limited number of seasons and episodes. The writers wanted characters to have meaningful material while they were part of the show, and discussed other possible deaths but rejected them when they wanted to preserve those characters’ future stories. As he put it, the books’ expansive cast is “wonderful for a book series, but is not something that’s practical when you’re casting actors.”

The Sammael decision served a different purpose: Judkins wanted viewers to see that the Forsaken were willing to act against one another, not merely talk about doing so. The show’s choice is not the same kind of adaptation change as Loial’s and Siuan’s deaths; it also emphasizes the danger within the Forsaken’s own rivalries.
What does the finale set up for Rand and Mat?
Rand and the Aiel
Rand declares himself Car’a’carn, He Who Comes with the Dawn, to the Aiel. After failing to bring the girl back, he moves toward a colder acceptance of his power and destiny. Judkins also pointed to a barely visible silhouette on a dune as a hint of the madness to come; he did not identify the figure as a confirmed character.

Mat and the Eelfinn
Mat goes through the red doorway in Tanchico and encounters the fox-faced Eelfinn. Judkins said the series moved this meeting from Rhuidean, where it takes place in the books alongside Rand and Moiraine’s visions, while aiming to preserve the Eelfinn’s uncanny, unsettling quality.
For readers comparing the adaptation with its source, season 3 is described by TVLine as primarily based on Robert Jordan’s fourth novel, The Shadow Rising. The show shifts events and changes character outcomes rather than reproducing the book’s plot exactly.

Will there be a season 4 of The Wheel of Time?
Prime Video cancelled the series after three seasons on May 23, 2025, five weeks after the season 3 finale premiered, according to TVLine. TheWrap also reported that it would not return to Prime Video and cited the show’s costs alongside its viewing performance as a likely factor. TVLine reported viewership slippage. These were reported explanations, not a public cancellation rationale from Prime Video.
On June 6, 2025, Judkins said he did not know why the show had been cancelled: “And the truth is, I don’t know.” He expressed hope that another network or service might continue the story, while acknowledging that such a continuation is uncommon. That hope is not confirmation that the show is being shopped or that a new season is planned. TV Insider reported Judkins’ statement that the series had spent “Nearly 20 weeks in the Nielsen Top 10”; that is his 2025 figure, not an independently audited count in the report. TV Insider’s interview includes his comments on the cancellation and possible return.
