First Lady Jill Biden hosted a partial The West Wing cast reunion in the White House Rose Garden on September 20, 2024, marking 25 years since the series premiered. The event paired familiar show references with a message about how storytelling can inspire public service.
What happened at the White House reunion?
The First Lady’s Office announced the event for September 20, 2024, at 5 p.m. Eastern, describing its purpose as marking the show’s 25th anniversary and celebrating storytelling’s role in inspiring Americans to pursue public service. The gathering took place in the Rose Garden.

As Biden walked to the podium with cast members, the series’ theme played. She said the group had just come from the Oval Office, adding that “President Bartlet and his staff had a chance to see the Oval Office again.” The event also included nods to the show’s “big blocks of cheese” and walk-and-talks, as well as a bourbon-and-ginger-ale cocktail called “The Jackal.”
Who attended—and who was missing?
The official pool report named creator and executive producer Aaron Sorkin and director-producer Thomas Schlamme, along with cast members Martin Sheen, Richard Schiff, Dulé Hill, Janel Moloney, Emily Procter, Melissa Fitzgerald, and Mary McCormack. Jill Biden, Sheen, and Sorkin were listed as speakers.

This was a reunion of a group of cast members and creative figures, not the entire cast. Associated Press coverage and the pool report noted that Allison Janney, Bradley Whitford, and Rob Lowe were absent and working on set elsewhere.
Why was the anniversary tied to public service?
Biden connected the series’ storylines to the work of teachers and public servants, recalling a plot in which Donna recognizes her high-school English teacher. In her prepared remarks, she said: “I often talk to my students about the power of good storytelling—because it can inspire and shape our world.”
She also described the show’s central idea as “this family we create here, dedicated to a purpose greater than any one of us.” Sheen echoed the service-oriented theme, calling for “something deeply personal and uncompromising, something that can unite the will of the spirit with the work of the flesh.”
What did Aaron Sorkin say?
Sorkin joked about events on set and described President Joe Biden’s July 21, 2024 decision to withdraw from the presidential race as a “West Wing moment.” He said, “The fact is, ‘West Wing’ moments do happen.” That was Sorkin’s analogy for the political moment, not an official characterization of the decision.

How did the anniversary fit into the show’s legacy?
The White House event followed a separate anniversary exhibition, Inside The West Wing: A 25th Anniversary Salute, at the Paley Museum. The Paley Center for Media’s exhibit ran from July 5 through September 8, 2024, and featured costumes, props, video, memorabilia, a pressroom photo opportunity, and screenings of selected episodes. It had ended before the White House gathering.
The Paley Center said the series won 27 Primetime Emmy Awards, including four for Outstanding Drama Series. Together, the exhibition and White House event marked the anniversary in different ways: one focused on the show’s artifacts and episodes, while the other linked its stories to public service.
