Spoilers for all eight episodes of Season 1. Grady dies in The Waterfront finale: Cane shoots him during the Buckley family’s attempt to rescue Bree. The death is confirmed by creator Kevin Williamson, and it changes Cane’s relationship with his father while setting up a new conflict around Belle and the Parkers.
How Grady dies
Grady’s partnership with Harlan has fallen apart by the finale, and he abducts Bree. Harlan, Cane and Shawn set out to rescue her. Bree’s son, Diller, has secretly stowed away on Grady’s boat.

Bree tries to escape, but Grady shoots her in the leg and throws her overboard. Diller helps keep her afloat until her family reaches her and gets her to the hospital. During the confrontation, Cane shoots Grady. Netflix’s finale explainer quotes Williamson confirming, “He’s dead,” adding, “Sadly, this isn’t The Vampire Diaries. People can’t come back.” Grady is not left missing or presumed dead.
Why Cane shoots Grady
The rescue reaches a point where Harlan and Cane realize Grady must be stopped by killing him. Cane pulls the trigger. Williamson told TheWrap, “He doesn’t kill anyone until that final episode.” The act is Cane’s first killing and a decisive moral crossing.

Grady’s death is pointed in another way: he had hoped his arrangement with Harlan would work. Instead of Harlan killing him, it is Harlan’s son who ends the partnership—and Grady’s life.
What the killing means for Cane and Harlan
Harlan sees Cane’s action as proof that his son has stepped into the family crisis and, in Harlan’s eyes, become a man. His pride sits alongside the weight Cane now carries. The finale also gives father and son some emotional movement: Harlan admits he wanted Cane to stay because he did not want to run the family business without him.

Their relationship improves, but it is not fully repaired. Williamson describes the resolution as partial, leaving room for the strain between them to continue.
Does Bree survive, and what happens to Diller?
Yes. Bree survives the gunshot and being thrown into the water. Diller’s decision to hide aboard the boat allows him to help keep her afloat until the family arrives.

The rescue also shifts the relationship between mother and son. Netflix’s explainer describes Diller as moving from simmering resentment to genuine concern for Bree. Their reunion offers a chance to reconnect, but it does not erase Bree’s addiction recovery or the trauma in her past.

Grady’s death resolves the immediate danger to Bree, but the closing scene introduces a larger threat to the family’s unity. Belle meets Emmett Parker, whose family has more power than the Buckleys. The Parkers treat Belle as a pragmatic partner and their preferred point of contact; they hold Wes and demand his loyalty to her new position.

The finale therefore shifts the central danger from Grady’s direct violence to an unstable alliance among Belle, the Buckleys and the Parkers.
