In winter, people traditionally carry it beneath a pheran, the Kashmiri cloak, or under a blanket. It is both a practical source of warmth and an object closely woven into Kashmiri cultural life.
What a kangri is and how it works
A kangri has two main parts: an earthen vessel that holds hot embers, and a wicker casing with a handle. The casing makes the heater portable and keeps the hands away from the hot pot. Its warmth is carried beneath a pheran or a blanket, close to the body. The Western Australian Museum describes it as inexpensive and portable, while noting that gas and electric heating options are becoming more accessible but remain expensive alternatives in its account of Kashmiri winters. Everyday warmth and ceremonial forms
Kangris serve ordinary winter routines, but not every example is plain or purely utilitarian. The museum distinguishes everyday versions from more ornamented Maharani (“queen”) kangris used for festivals and rituals. Its collection record documents one object collected in 1975: that particular basket has natural and red-orange coloring, a hollow base, a diamond-like upward angle, colored bands and a heavy-duty handle. Why the kangri matters in Kashmiri life
The kangri is not simply a heating device. The Western Australian Museum says it has “a significant place in the culture and heritage of Kashmir,” describing it as embedded in everyday life and important rituals, and as a symbol of Kashmiri identity. The object brings together warmth, clothing, craft and shared seasonal practice. The District Srinagar government describes the region’s broader cultural traditions, though its culture page does not specifically discuss the kangri. What is known—and uncertain—about its history
The kangri’s precise origin is not settled by the available accounts. The Western Australian Museum reports a theory that it was adapted from the Italian scaldino during the Mughal Empire period (1526–1757). The museum counters that theory with archival evidence it says indicates kangri use before 1526, and cites a reference associated with Sheikh Noor-ud-din Wali (1377–1440). These are historical claims reported by the museum; the underlying archival documents are not reproduced in the account, so neither a definitive inventor nor an exact invention date can be established from it.
A government catalog record offers a route into the craft’s later documented history: it lists a 1989 publication titled Rural Based Handicraft Study of Kangri, Willow Wicker Basketry, produced under the Census 1981 series. The catalog says the study addresses craft history and development, practice inside and outside the state, villages and craft households. Health considerations of prolonged direct heat
The Western Australian Museum notes that prolonged kangri use is associated with heat-induced skin carcinoma, commonly called kangri cancer, particularly on the abdomen and inner thighs. It says the condition was linked to kangri use in the early twentieth century and remains a problem, while describing it as rare. The account supplies no current incidence estimate or individualized medical guidance, so it cannot quantify an individual’s risk. Its practical point is that prolonged direct heat exposure has a potential health cost; a historical museum summary should not be treated as clinical advice. A September 6, 2026 report in The Kashmir Monitor says the Jammu and Kashmir Handicrafts and Handloom Department was working to seek geographical indication (GI) recognition for the kangri and wagguv. The report quotes Mehmood Ahmad Shah, identified with Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir, saying: “Kangri is unique to Kashmir so is Wagguv. We want that they should also be granted a GI tag given its exclusivity.” That is a stated intention to pursue recognition, not confirmation that an application was filed or that registration was granted.
