Chandralekha resisted the idea that dance could be preserved as a fixed object, yet her work has returned to public attention through the memories and bodies of the people who performed it. The clearest example is Sharira, her final choreography: created in 2000, it was revived after her death and became a way for new audiences to encounter the questions her work posed about the body, sexuality and dance.
Who was Chandralekha?
Chandralekha, also known as Chandralekha Prabhudas Patel, was an Indian dancer and choreographer whose career ran from the 1950s until her death in 2006. The Sharjah Art Foundation dates her life to 1928–2006 and describes a practice that challenged the hierarchies and disciplinary structures surrounding dance.
She trained in Bharatanatyam, then stepped away from the performing arts scene in the 1960s. About two decades later, she returned with choreography that placed classical forms in a contemporary context. Angika, identified by Australian Dance Australia as her acclaimed 1985 return production, marked that re-entry.
Her work was not simply a rejection of tradition. She worked from a Bharatanatyam foundation while questioning the social and artistic limits placed around it. A 2007 obituary in The Guardian describes her as both admired and controversial, and places her challenges to convention alongside concerns including the human body, sexuality, secularism, women’s rights and the environment.

What was distinctive about her dance?
Chandralekha connected Bharatanatyam with yoga, Chhau and the martial art Kalari. These strands had different roles in her practice: Bharatanatyam was her trained classical base, while yoga, Chhau and Kalari supplied other movement resources. The available institutional account identifies these connections but does not offer a technical breakdown of how particular movements were combined.
Her concerns also reached beyond movement vocabulary. Poetry, visual design and the South Asian women’s movement formed part of the wider world around her work. The Sharjah Art Foundation frames her choreography as a critique of nationalist bias, disciplinary regimes and class hierarchy—not as a simple exercise in blending styles.

A Visual Media and Image Centre exhibition entry quotes Chandralekha: “In the body, there is no difference between sensuality, sexuality, spirituality – the three are amalgam. We need all that.” The quotation conveys how closely she linked bodily experience and artistic thought; it is presented there as her words.
Why does Sharira matter to her rediscovery?
Sharira was Chandralekha’s final choreography, made in 2000 with Padmini Chettur and Shaji John. The work explores female sexuality and the body through a slow, demanding performance form. Its return offered audiences a direct encounter with a work that could not be reduced to a biography or an account of the choreographer’s ideas.

In a feature published on 30 December 2016, Scroll reported that Sharira had been performed more than a dozen times across India in the preceding year and a half. The same feature said it had been staged only five times over six years during Chandralekha’s lifetime. Those are figures reported in 2016, not a current performance total.
The contrast helps explain the word “rediscovery”: the work was known, but its renewed performance brought it to more stages and made it legible to a wider audience. Scroll described an acceleration of interest, but that observation is not a quantified audience survey or a measure of current popularity.

Why is Chandralekha’s work difficult to archive?
The problem is not merely that her work is old. According to Scroll’s 2016 account, the choreography was not systematically notated, Chandralekha disliked rehearsal filming, and surviving footage was limited. Reconstructing part of Sri therefore depended on recollections from older dancers and the work of younger performers.
That leaves a different kind of record from a fixed score or a complete video archive. A recording can show a performance, but it cannot by itself preserve all the knowledge held by dancers who learned, practised and transmitted the work. Nor does a fragment of footage settle how a choreography should be performed.

There are other ways to preserve a person’s presence. Sadanand Menon’s Spaces Chennai memorial page records a 2007 tribute built from voice recordings and personal memories, with events in Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai from 15 January to 15 February. The page lists 18 voice clips, including an excerpt of Chandralekha speaking about dance and life. A voice archive preserves testimony; it is not the same as fixing a dance work in notation.
How does a dance survive without a fixed archive?
In an interview with Ligament / Attakkalari, dancer and writer Tishani Doshi describes Chandralekha’s approach as putting the work “inside of a dancer’s body” so it could pass between bodies. Doshi presents continuing Sharira as a form of embodied transmission: performers carry the choreography by performing it, and the collective act can make Chandralekha present without claiming to reproduce her unchanged.
This account also makes the tension in Chandralekha’s legacy clearer. The work’s survival depends on memory, teaching and performance—the very processes that can preserve a living practice while allowing it to shift. That is not the same as an authoritative, complete reconstruction, and the surviving accounts do not establish a definitive version of every work.
Menon’s memorial page records that Chandralekha often quoted “shokaat shloka,” which he glosses as “from sorrow, poetry.” Alongside the voice recordings, the phrase suggests another form of remembrance: not only preserving what was said, but continuing to interpret and make meaning from what remains.
