The War and Treaty’s political story centers on their support for Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential campaign. A 2025 profile says the Nashville-based duo’s backlash intensified after they collaborated with Jon Bon Jovi on “The People’s House,” which the profile describes as an endorsement of Harris. The available record also places the duo at a Harris campaign event in Charlotte, but it does not establish the scale or specific causes of the backlash.
Who are The War and Treaty, and why is Nashville part of the story?
The War and Treaty is the musical duo formed by Michael and Tanya Trotter. A Chicago Sun-Times profile published June 23, 2025, identifies Nashville as the couple’s adopted home. That locates the duo in the city; it does not mean their political support or the resulting backlash was confined to Nashville.
What was their connection to Kamala Harris?
The Sun-Times profile says The War and Treaty teamed with Jon Bon Jovi on “The People’s House” in support of Harris, who was then a presidential candidate. It characterizes the song as an endorsement. Separately, Harris’s remarks at a November 2, 2024 campaign event in Charlotte, North Carolina, acknowledge the duo among the people at the event: “And for Brittany Spencer and Khalid, The War and Treaty, and Jon Bon Jovi — (applause).” The transcript verifies their acknowledgment at the event, not what they said or did there beyond that.
The distinction matters: the profile links the song to the endorsement, while the official transcript documents their presence at a campaign event. Neither source establishes the duo’s private reasons for supporting Harris.

What is known about the backlash?
A Yahoo-republished Billboard interview listing, published November 21, 2024, frames its conversation with the duo at the CMA Awards around backlash over their Harris support. The Sun-Times profile later says the backlash intensified after the Bon Jovi collaboration. Together, these sources establish that backlash was discussed and connect it to their public political support.
They do not establish how many people objected, what specific arguments were most common, or whether the episode changed the duo’s ticket sales, audience size, or campaign impact. The Yahoo page’s available search excerpt includes the headline wording “Social Media Doesn’t Translate To Ticket Sales,” but does not supply the full interview passage or identify a speaker for that wording. It should not be treated as a verified quotation from either member.
