The Vow: What Was the DOS Group in NXIVM?

DOS, also called “The Vow,” was a secret society created within NXIVM in 2015, according to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). Prosecutors described a hierarchy in which women were designated “slaves” under “masters” and said recruits were presented with the group as a women-only mentorship or empowerment opportunity. Those descriptions of DOS’s structure and recruitment are prosecution accounts; they should be distinguished from the later jury verdict against NXIVM founder Keith Raniere.

What was DOS within NXIVM?

In its 2018 announcement of charges, the DOJ described DOS as a secret society created within NXIVM in 2015 and also called “The Vow.” That establishes the relationship in the prosecution’s account: DOS was not described as an unrelated organization, but as a group formed within NXIVM.

The label “The Vow” refers to the name used for the society in the DOJ’s description. It should not be confused with a neutral membership or self-help label: prosecutors said the group operated through a hierarchy and described its members using the terms “masters” and “slaves.”

How did prosecutors describe DOS’s structure and recruitment?

The hierarchy

The DOJ’s 2018 indictment announcement described women in DOS as “slaves” under “masters.” Those are terms attributed to the group’s alleged internal structure, not neutral descriptions of a mentorship relationship.

A DOJ complaint further alleged that Raniere stood alone at the top of a DOS pyramid. Because that account came from a complaint, it is an allegation and should not be presented as a separate jury finding. The complaint also alleged DOS activity in parts of the United States, Canada, and Mexico; that geographic account is likewise an allegation, not a finding established merely by the complaint.

The recruitment pitch

The DOJ said women were recruited with the representation that they were joining a women-only mentorship or empowerment group. In its October 2020 sentencing announcement, the department likewise characterized recruits as entering under the false pretense of a women-only mentorship group before discovering vows of obedience. These are DOJ’s descriptions of the recruitment process, not a claim that every person associated with NXIVM or DOS had the same experience.

What was established in Raniere’s criminal case?

In June 2019, a federal jury found Keith Raniere guilty on all seven counts charged, according to the DOJ. The charges included racketeering and racketeering conspiracy, sex-trafficking offenses, forced-labor conspiracy, and wire-fraud conspiracy. The verdict was a finding about Raniere; it does not mean that every person connected with NXIVM or DOS was convicted.

In October 2020, the DOJ announced that Raniere was sentenced to 120 years in prison for racketeering and sex-trafficking offenses. The conviction and sentence are court outcomes; they are distinct from the allegations made in the earlier complaint about DOS’s full hierarchy and geographic reach.

How to read accounts of DOS accurately

  • Group identity: DOJ described DOS, or “The Vow,” as a secret society created within NXIVM in 2015.
  • Structure and recruitment: Attribute the “masters” and “slaves” hierarchy and the women-only mentorship or empowerment pitch to DOJ’s prosecution and sentencing accounts.
  • Complaint details: Treat claims about Raniere’s position at the top of the pyramid and DOS’s geographic reach as allegations in the complaint.
  • Criminal outcome: State separately that a jury convicted Raniere on all seven counts in 2019 and that he received a 120-year sentence in 2020.
