The twist attached to The Voice’s Season 28 is the reported Carson Callback Card. It lets host Carson Daly choose one artist who did not receive a coach’s chair turn during the blind auditions and give that singer another chance. It is a narrow audition exception. Reporting does not show that it rewrote the season, changed how the competition ran, or altered the eventual result.
What the Carson Callback is
Season 28 premiered on NBC on September 22, 2025, and the callback was the feature that drew attention around the premiere. According to secondary entertainment reporting, the Carson Callback Card works like this: during the blind auditions, when every coach has turned away from a performer, Daly can pick one of those artists and send them back to the stage for a second look. The reports describe a single use of the card in the premiere, not a repeating allowance.
The mechanics come from press coverage. An official NBC rules statement describing the callback could not be checked for this article, so readers should treat the details below as reported until an episode or an NBC announcement confirms them.
How the callback differs from the normal audition rule
In the general Voice format, coaches sit with their backs to the stage and hear each singer without seeing them. A coach who likes what they hear presses a button to turn around. If no coach turns, the artist is eliminated. The callback is the only reported exception to that outcome.

| Question | Standard blind audition (general format) | Carson Callback (reported, Season 28) |
|---|---|---|
| Who decides who advances? | Coaches, by pressing a button to turn | Carson Daly, using the card |
| Did the artist get a chair turn? | Advancing requires at least one turn | No; the artist received no turn |
| How many artists can be recalled? | Not applicable | One, per the reports |
| What happens next? | Advancing artists join a coach’s team for Battle Rounds | Reports do not state the team placement; treat this as not stated |
The last row matters for readers who expect a clean rule. Public reporting describes the recall, but it does not clearly specify which coach’s team the recalled artist joins, so that detail should not be assumed.
The first callback
One report, from CinemaBlend, identifies Ryan Mitchell as the first artist brought back with the card, during the September 22, 2025 premiere. That attribution comes from one outlet’s coverage, so it is the detail most worth checking against the broadcast itself if you need it for citation.

What is and is not established
- Established by reporting: the card exists, it is used by Carson Daly, it lets him recall one artist without a chair turn, and the premiere featured it.
- Not established: that the callback changed the season’s competition structure, that it gave artists a general route into later rounds, or that the recalled artist’s later results were different because of it.
- No published effect data: the sources available for this article include no audience, audition, or outcome figures measuring the callback’s impact.
- No verified explanation: no named producer or executive explanation of why the callback was added has been confirmed on the record.
Because the callback changes only one blind-audition result, any claim that it “rewrote” Season 28 goes beyond the evidence. What the reporting supports is a single exception at the audition stage.

The guide describes the season’s structure, not every advancement rule, so it does not explain the callback mechanics. It also states that the winner receives $100,000 and a record contract with Universal Music Group (Peacock, 2025). That prize figure is the guide’s description and is not tied to the callback.
Where to watch and vote
Peacock’s 2025 guide said Season 28 episodes would stream there the day after the NBC broadcast. That was the stated arrangement for the 2025 season. Whether the episodes remain in Peacock’s catalog as of October 2026 has not been verified, so check the service before assuming access.
NBC’s official The Voice app offers play-along games, fantasy teams, artist profiles, performance videos, polls, and trivia. Voting in NBC’s help center requires an NBCUniversal Profile and is limited to eligible locations and set voting windows. Features and rules can change between seasons, so confirm them on the app or NBC’s help pages before relying on them.

The Voice changes its rules from season to season. NBCUniversal announced changes for Season 30 on September 17, 2026. Those changes are not part of Season 28 and should not be used to explain the Carson Callback.
