FX’s six-episode spy thriller The Veil is most compelling when Elisabeth Moss’s MI6 agent and Yumna Marwan’s guarded Adilah are testing one another’s stories. Their wary exchanges give the series an emotional center; its plotting and political ideas prove less substantial. Critics agree that the performances and central relationship have force, but differ on whether Moss fits the role and whether the thriller’s twists keep it moving or make it feel contrived.
What is The Veil about?
FX describes The Veil as an international spy thriller about two women caught in a dangerous game of truth and lies as they travel from Istanbul to Paris and London. Imogen Salter (Moss), a British MI6 agent, must find out what Adilah El Idrissi (Marwan) is concealing before an attack takes lives. CIA official Max Peterson (Josh Charles) and French DGSE operative Malik Amar (Dali Benssalah) operate in the background. Steven Knight wrote and executive produced the series; FX Productions produced it. FX’s series page gives the official premise and credits.
Hulu lists one season of six episodes and labels the show a thriller and drama rated TV-MA. That listing establishes Hulu as a viewing option, but does not guarantee the same catalog availability in every country or at every date. Hulu’s listing is the place to check current access. The original release plan, reported by D23 on February 9, 2024, was a two-episode debut on April 30, followed by one episode each Tuesday; that is historical scheduling information, not a current availability promise. D23’s announcement records that rollout.
The two-hander is the show’s strongest asset
The tension between Imogen and Adilah is less about action than interpretation: each woman tries to determine what the other believes, what she is hiding, and whether any moment of trust is genuine. The uncertainty gives their conversations the pressure a spy thriller needs. The women are not simply exchanging clues; their guardedness and shifting balance of power become the story’s most engaging question.

TVLine’s Dave Nemetz calls their relationship the show’s biggest strength and praises Marwan for holding her own opposite Moss. Los Angeles Times critic Robert Lloyd likewise identifies the performances and character dynamic as the drama’s center. Those responses point to a productive contrast: Moss plays Imogen with tightly controlled intensity, while Marwan brings vulnerability to Adilah without making her easy to read. The result is a duel that can hold attention even when the surrounding plot starts to feel less secure. TVLine’s review and the Los Angeles Times review both emphasize that dynamic.
Moss’s force—and the question of fit
Moss gives Imogen an unmistakable physical and psychological presence. She can make the agent’s focus feel dangerous, and the part gives her room to act decisively rather than merely react. But force is not the same as fit. The character is also meant to possess ease and charm, qualities that can make manipulation look effortless. Some critics found a gap between that description and Moss’s tightly wound performance.

TIME critic Judy Berman argues that Moss is miscast as the swaggering agent and that the show leaves its political ideas and themes undeveloped. TV Guide’s Liam Mathews also flags the accent work as distracting, while calling the series “a well-made and entertaining mass-market spy thriller.” These are critical judgments, not objective assessments of Moss’s accent or acting. Other critics find the lead performances compelling, so the mismatch question is a genuine point of disagreement rather than a settled verdict. Berman’s TIME review and Mathews’s TV Guide review make the reservations clear.
Does the thriller stay propulsive?
At six episodes, The Veil has a compact frame, and TVLine sees it as tense and propulsive. Nemetz writes, “The Veil is certainly efficient.” Yet his review also faults unnecessary subplots, strange turns, and convenient contrivances that weaken the ride. The tension can carry a scene, but the plot’s devices do not always make the larger story feel coherent.

That split helps explain why the series may work better moment to moment than as a tightly engineered thriller. Its central relationship keeps the question of trust alive; fake-outs and side routes can divert attention without deepening that question. TV Guide’s more positive verdict—entertaining and easy to follow—suggests that viewers who want accessible spy-thriller momentum may be more forgiving of those shortcuts than viewers looking for intricate plotting. TVLine and TV Guide offer those contrasting assessments.
Spy story or political drama?
The series puts terrorism, intelligence agencies, and cross-border pursuit to work as thriller machinery. That is not the same as making geopolitics or ideology its sustained subject. Lloyd’s Los Angeles Times reading is useful here: “It’s a road movie, basically.” He sees the premise as a device for a character drama rather than an extended examination of terrorism or intelligence politics.

That approach concentrates the show’s attention on the women’s changing relationship as they move across Europe. It also sets a limit: viewers seeking a detailed political drama may find the themes less developed than the premise implies. For viewers more interested in the question of whether Imogen can read Adilah—and what that recognition costs—the thriller setup provides a route into the character conflict rather than a promise of geopolitical depth.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is The Veil worth watching?
It is worth considering for the Moss–Marwan pairing and the uncertain trust between their characters. The series gives Moss room to project physical agency and intensity, while Marwan makes Adilah a convincing counterweight. The story loses force when contrivances and extra plot turns interrupt that duel, and critical responses differ over Moss’s fit and the show’s tonal details.

Choose it for a compact character-led spy thriller, not for a fully developed political drama or a plot whose every turn feels inevitable. Its best scenes make the central relationship do the suspenseful work; its weaker stretches ask thriller mechanics to carry more than they can.
