Vivek Agnihotri’s The Vaccine War is a 161-minute Hindi drama about scientists working on Covaxin, but it is not simply a lab-centered tribute: the film’s own framing casts scrutiny and foreign lobbying as obstacles, making its treatment of criticism and the media central to the story. That is a dramatic perspective, not proof that all criticism was hostile or improper.

What is The Vaccine War about?

Released in 2023, the film dramatizes the development of Covaxin, also known as BBV152, and the work of scientists associated with the Indian Council of Medical Research and the National Institute of Virology. It is based on Balram Bhargava’s book Going Viral: Making of Covaxin. The International Film Festival of India’s 2023 guide lists it as a drama and thriller, directed and written by Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, with Nana Patekar, Anupam Kher and Pallavi Joshi among its cast. The guide gives the runtime as 161 minutes.

The IFFI synopsis describes scientists prevailing amid scrutiny and foreign lobbying. That language captures the movie’s framing; it should not be mistaken for a complete or independently verified history of Covaxin, regulatory decisions, or India’s pandemic response.

A tribute to scientists, shaped by a political argument

The film’s tribute is explicit. In a pre-release interview, Nana Patekar, who plays Balram Bhargava, said the film aimed to honor scientists and described their work as extraordinary. He also said: “Not only cricketers and movie stars are heroes; our soldiers, police officers, and scientists are also heroes.” That statement explains the filmmakers’ stated intent; it does not establish the accuracy of the screenplay’s historical claims.

The tension is that the film’s celebration of scientific work comes with a pointed account of the forces around it. By presenting scrutiny as a challenge to be overcome, it invites viewers to read media attention and dissent through the film’s conflict-driven lens. The result may work as a patriotic drama while narrowing the space it gives to legitimate questions about science, public communication, and oversight.

What the criticism of the film focuses on

In a 2024 review for the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics, Rohin Bhatt argues that The Vaccine War depicts dissent as anti-national and leaves out serious hardships in the pandemic response. Bhatt also argues that the film’s account omits scrutiny of Covaxin and regulatory questions. These are the reviewer’s criticisms of the movie, not a substitute for primary evidence about the vaccine or government decisions.

That distinction matters for a documentary-minded viewer. A dramatization can make a coherent story from selected events, but a film’s characterization of critics is not itself evidence about their motives, and a tribute is not an exhaustive record. Viewers seeking a fuller account should treat the film as an interpretation of events rather than a standalone history.

Is it a reliable account of Covaxin’s development?

The available sources establish the film’s subject and its basis in Bhargava’s book, but they do not verify the accuracy of every scene. The movie is therefore best approached on two tracks: as a drama about scientists and institutional pressure, and as a perspective that makes choices about which conflicts to emphasize. Its account should not be used on its own to settle questions about regulatory scrutiny, media coverage, or the broader pandemic response.

Verdict: who should watch it?

Watch The Vaccine War if you want a dramatic, explicitly admiring portrayal of scientists involved in Covaxin’s development and are prepared to consider how the film frames their critics. Its 161-minute runtime allows room for an expansive account, but its focus is a chosen narrative, not the full history of India’s pandemic response. For a more grounded comparison of the film’s account with its source material, Bhargava’s Going Viral: Making of Covaxin is the natural companion—not independent validation of the movie.
