In Stranger Things canon, Eleven inadvertently created the Upside Down on November 6, 1983, when Dr. Brenner directed her to make remote contact with the Abyss. That contact formed a bridge between Hawkins and the Abyss; it did not create the creature-filled realm itself. Behind the scenes, the production team made the Upside Down’s look by dressing familiar sets with practical growth and using visual effects to extend large environments.
How was the Upside Down created in the story?
The final-season explanation changes the characters’ original understanding of the Upside Down as simply an alternate version of Hawkins. Dustin discovers that it is a wormhole—a bridge connecting Hawkins to another world, which he names the Abyss. Netflix’s final-season explainer describes the connection as a bridge between two points in time and space.

The sequence of events matters: Eleven had earlier banished Henry Creel to the Abyss. Later, Brenner made Eleven search for Henry, and she made remote contact with the Abyss. That contact formed the Upside Down. Henry, who becomes Vecna, and the creatures use the bridge to reach Hawkins; the official explanation does not credit him with creating it.
What is the difference between the Upside Down and the Abyss?
| Place | What it is | Its role in the story |
|---|---|---|
| Upside Down | A wormhole or bridge connecting Hawkins and the Abyss | It provides a route between the two worlds. |
| Abyss | The other world inhabited by the Mind Flayer, Demogorgons, vines, and other creatures | Henry is banished there, and its creatures use the bridge toward Hawkins. |
This distinction separates the pathway from the place the creatures come from: the Upside Down is not their original homeworld.

Why is the Upside Down frozen in 1983?
The Hawkins copy in the Upside Down retains the state of the town when Eleven inadvertently created the bridge. Production designer Chris Trujillo described the set dressing and world as frozen at that moment. The date is November 6, 1983—the day Will Byers disappeared and the gate opened. That is why a room such as Nancy’s can remain in its earlier state in the Upside Down even as events continue in Hawkins. This frozen-state rule describes how the copy appears; it is separate from the wormhole’s origin.
How did the production team create the look?
The crew generally filmed the real-world scene first, then dressed the same physical set as the Upside Down. Asked whether they built duplicate sets, Trujillo said, “Generally, we shoot the real world of the script and then shoot the Upside Down. It’s all the same set.” The approach let familiar rooms and locations become uncanny through their altered surfaces rather than through entirely separate builds.

Practical sets and materials
To make the environment feel like an infestation, the design team drew on mold, mildew, spreading disease, and microscopic photography. They experimented with rubber, foam, plastic, and paint, attached vines to surfaces, and painted around them. Trujillo estimated that the Wheeler and Byers home interiors he discussed were “almost always 95% practical.” The figure is his estimate for those interior environments, not a measure of every shot or season. The team also floated organic pussy willow fluff to suggest airborne particles.
Trujillo summed up the connection between the frozen setting and the story’s creation moment: “The moment that the Upside Down was ‘created’ inadvertently by Eleven, the set dressing and the world of the Upside Down is frozen in that moment.” The interview and production details are in Netflix Tudum’s production-design account and transcript on the frozen set dressing.

Visual effects for larger environments
Practical dressing was not the whole method. Visual effects extended broad outdoor environments, where a physical set could not provide the full scale. The on-screen Upside Down therefore combines tangible detail in interiors with digital extensions for expansive views.

The Upside Down’s origin, its connection to the Abyss, and its 1983 frozen state are elements of the show’s fictional canon, not explanations of real-world physics. Netflix’s final-season account supplies the current story explanation; earlier characters’ theories about an alternate Hawkins do not describe the final reveal.
