The Union pairs an unlikely spy recruit with the woman who knows him best: Mark Wahlberg plays Mike McKenna, a New Jersey construction worker, while Halle Berry plays his former high-school sweetheart, Roxanne Hall, now a Union agent. She brings Mike into a dangerous intelligence mission in Europe, giving this action-comedy its blue-collar point of view and its emotional center.
What is The Union about?
Mike McKenna is comfortable with his routine as a New Jersey construction worker until Roxanne Hall reappears. She has become an operative for The Union, an organization that recruits ordinary blue-collar workers and trains them for covert assignments. Roxanne persuades Mike to join a mission in Europe, where their unresolved history unfolds alongside espionage, combat and high-speed car chases.

The central pairing: Mike and Roxanne
Mike McKenna — Mark Wahlberg
Mike starts as an approachable, settled construction worker rather than a trained operative. Roxanne’s return forces him to exchange familiar job sites for intelligence work, and his lack of field experience supplies much of the film’s comic tension. Netflix’s feature notes that Wahlberg drew on the image of steelworkers working high above the ground when discussing Mike’s fearlessness.
Roxanne Hall — Halle Berry
Roxanne has built a radically different life since high school. As a Union agent, she recruits Mike because the organization needs capable everyday people for covert work. Her professional confidence contrasts with Mike’s inexperience, while their past relationship keeps the mission personal.
The Union’s handlers and field team
Tom Brennan — J.K. Simmons
Tom is a former CIA agent who now works for The Union. He lets Roxanne run the operation and helps supervise Mike as the newcomer learns what the job demands.
Nick Faraday — Mike Colter
Nick is Roxanne’s partner in life and in the field. His place beside Roxanne adds another dimension to Mike’s return and to the team’s working relationships.

Why the blue-collar spy premise matters
The Union’s defining idea is that espionage skills do not belong only to polished government professionals. Halle Berry described the organization as doing the “dirty work” for the CIA and FBI and said it recruits “blue-collar workers, everyday average people” to train in shooting, combat intelligence and tactical weaponry. Those are Berry’s comments in a Netflix interview, describing the film’s fictional premise rather than the structure of a real intelligence agency.
That concept also explains the ensemble: Mike brings construction experience, Frank brings combat expertise, Foreman brings technical and industrial know-how, and the team’s established agents turn those abilities into field skills. Mike Colter summarized the idea in the same interview by saying The Union gives such people an opportunity to use what they already have.
