The BBC disputed that account, saying it does not ban songs. The available reports do not establish a continuing, BBC-wide ban.
Which Rod Stewart songs were at the centre of the BBC dispute?
- “The Killing of Georgie (Part I and II)”, a song Stewart said the BBC banned when it was first released in 1976.
- “Grace,” which Stewart said he was not allowed to sing in a proposed BBC Radio session because of its Irish, anti-English overtones.
These are Stewart’s accounts, not a documented BBC-wide prohibition. In its response to the 2018 story, a BBC spokesperson said: “This story is categorically untrue. No songs are banned on the BBC. We do not ban songs.” The Irish News reported both Stewart’s claims and the BBC’s denial on 1 October 2018.
What did Stewart say about “The Killing of Georgie”?
Stewart recalled that the BBC banned the song when it first came out. During a 2018 interview, he said he had hoped to perform it in a BBC Radio acoustic session but was told it was too controversial. He put it this way: “I thought it would be OK now because they banned it when it first came out.” Yahoo Entertainment republished the interview on 25 September 2018.
The song was released as a single in 1976 and appears on A Night on the Town, according to Rod Stewart’s official timeline. That release information provides context; it does not independently verify Stewart’s recollection of a BBC ban. The available sources do not establish the original decision’s exact date, duration, or scope.

Why was “Grace” part of the story?
Stewart said the proposed session also would not allow him to sing “Grace,” describing it as a song with Irish, anti-English overtones. This was a claim about a particular performance request, not proof that the BBC had imposed a lasting restriction on the song across its services.
There is also a relevant later event: The Irish News reported on 4 October 2018 that Stewart sang lines from “Grace” during an appearance on BBC Breakfast. That report is inconsistent with describing the matter as an ongoing prohibition on all BBC programming.

Was Rod Stewart formally banned from singing either song on BBC Radio?
The careful answer is that Stewart said he was refused permission to perform the songs in the BBC contexts he described, while the BBC denied that it bans songs. The reporting available here does not include a BBC archive record confirming the alleged 1976 decision or documenting a formal restriction in 2018. It therefore supports describing a disputed account of particular performance requests—not stating as settled fact that the BBC maintained a formal ban on either song.
